Not sure entirely unfairly, but clearly down to the relationship with Pardew. As soon as Sammy Lee had kicked up the bum he improved.

He's one of our best players, works hard, seems to have a great temperament and in very good shape. Good pro. Anyone that thinks otherwise is weird, thick or racist

Looks like he's on football focus tomorrow, partly discussing his goal at the Etihad, as there is part of an interview on the BBC I player app

Sterling, Sancho and Rashford are better, likes of Hudson Odoi and Demarai Gray are young and have lots of room to improve, unlike Andros. Can’t see it happening tbh, but would be happy for him. It’s a bit of a James Tomkins situation, who like Andros would be sitting in England’s bench/reserves over a younger player who could be good enough for England’s first 11 in the future, and could do with the experience.

He does have qualities that Southgate appears to look for; work rate, the fact he's a genuine team player and slowly becoming a leader in his own right. Agree though, sadly it is unlikely. Right now, I'd much prefer Townsend in the squad than Gray though.

Yeah, Gray hasn’t looked all that recently from what I’ve seen, although still has lots of potential imo. Think a better example would be 19 year old Reiss Nelson, who’s playing excellently in Germany for a good Hoffeinheim side this season.

Yeah, I saw him the other day whilst wasting time looking at goals and assists in the Bundesliga. He's gone under the radar a bit. As has the fellow loaned from Watford (not English). I think he's on his way back there this January, as much as I hate them, you do have to give them credit in the transfer market.

Despite having an excellent shot on him, he doesn't seem to take more than one or two shots a game. Forgive me if I've forgotten but today I don't think he even took a shot. Very frustrating when he always mentions wanting to score more goals in interviews.

His lack of pace and his one footedness means he never gets himself through on goal, he gets pushed out wide where he then crosses it - or has a shot from range of course!

I love Andros, he's a machine, but don't expect too many goals from him.

Yep, 100% energy but never threatened an assist or a goal.

Also, rarely actually tackles a player

I don't think it's necessarily accurate to label anyone who suggests Townsend isn't fully utilising his natural talent as never being positive about anything. Similarly, I could say that Schlupp has the same amount of league goals as Townsend (and Zaha) in far fewer minutes yet gets absolute pelters on here while Townsend gets very little criticism whatsoever.

Andros has played virtually every minute either as striker or winger in 11 home games where we've mustered two penalties, a cross that drifted in, today's own goal and two speculative worldies. One of which was his and somewhat backs up my observation that he doesn't shoot enough, despite having an excellent shot.

I fully appreciate his work rate and for much less talented players that would be enough but work rate isn't a unique skill we signed an England international for. His shooting ability is and having already said on multiple occasions he wants to score more goals, having just been deservedly awarded PL goal of the month for the best Palace goal I've ever seen and knowing we struggle to score from other areas, especially at home, I'm disappointed he didn't have a single shot today and generally doesn't shoot often at home.

Clearly we have different opinions on what constitutes "being a threat". In my opinion, a talented experienced attacking player for a team with the second fewest home goals in the league has to take more direct responsibility for our attacking output to be considered a threat, even if it means occasionally sacrificing some of his defensive work.

Of course other players are at fault too but this is a Townsend thread, so I'm only discussing him specifically.

He wasnít a threat , what does he do? His crossing is terrible, his goal return isnít great, so he runs round a lot. Brilliant

Sell him and get a decent winger in who is exciting to watch and can cross the ball

Reminds me of the discussion around Darren Ambrose - the perception that he scores blinders and does nothing else. I think that was accurate with Ambrose, but not with Townsend, he offers a lot more.
