Hasn't been a great manager for 5 years or so

Can anyone remember the last title challenge under him? OK, the new money clubs have made things much harder but this is Arsenal, the 3rd most successful club in the land and biggest club in the capital. Used the money excuse to cover for his underperformance for years and the refusal to buy a decent DM and defenders was criminal. Any manager with a vague understanding of defensive organisation sorts them out soon enough imo

also he's an arrogant old twat and condescending to the smaller clubs when they beat him (cough Stoke) so he can do one

He was obviously a fine coach but in the past few years can any obvious player development or improvement be seen?

Well Sanchez certainly became more consistent, but it is not like he was a nobody.

Bellerin and Kosielny are the obvious ones. If Ramsay hadn’t been injured quite as much as he was I would imagine we’d be talking about him more.

But the criticism is certainly valid.

Arsene Wenger Premier League stats: Games 823, wins 473, losses 151, goals scored 1,549, league titles
The American praised Wenger's "exceptional record", adding that he "transformed the identity of our club and of English football with his vision for how the game can be played".

Appointed on 1 October 1996, he is the Premier League's current longest-serving manager and has taken charge of a record 823 games.

But some fans have turned on the Frenchman over the past two seasons as a result of their league performances. Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle was their 11th in the league this season, equalling their worst tally in a campaign under Wenger. They are 33 points behind leaders Manchester City, who have 87 points, and the same number away from bottom side West Brom, who have 21.

In 2003-04, he became the first manager since 1888-89 to lead a team through an English top-flight season unbeaten.

But after winning the 2005 FA Cup, they waited another nine years - or 3,283 days - for their next silverware. It came as they beat Hull City to win the 2014 FA Cup, before winning the trophy again the following season.

Wenger won his seventh FA Cup last season, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley, but finished 18 points behind Antonio Conte's Premier League champions.

His side have struggled in Europe since losing to Barcelona in 2006 Champions League final.

They were eliminated at the last-16 stage for the seventh successive season on their last appearance in the competition in 2017, losing 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich.

In 2006, they moved into the 390m Emirates Stadium after leaving Highbury.

The Gunners have consistently spent less than their main Premier League rivals on new signings, but Wenger twice broke the club's transfer record this season.

France striker Alexandre Lacazette joined in the summer for 46.5m, while his final signing was Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for 56m in January.

Cheers Geoff

I watched the programme on channel 5 about him against Ferguson. I think we forget just how good Arsenal were from 1997-2004. Wenger’s problem is that he never really replaced that team. As someone else above has said, it’s almost like when Chelsea and then subsequently Man City started throwing money around, he just waved the white flag.

Ferguson in fairness to him, rebuilt teams a few times. He did have almost a core for 15 or so years of Scholes, Giggs and Neville, which I’m sure made it easier, but when Chelsea came in they kept going. When Man City came along, they kept going.

To be fair, a lot of the free cashflow at Arsenal had to be diverted to pay for the new stadium, which greatly limited his ability to compete in the transfer market. By the time he had money to spend again, he seemed to have forgotten how!

Yeah, you can see why the owners loved him - to keep them competitive over this period of time whilst being outspent by the others is a good effort.

I went off Wenger when he stated that the second group stage of the Champions League should be re-introduced so that Arsenal could make more money. To that end, he wanted the Premier League to be reduced to 18 teams so that the "big 4" did not suffer any fixture congestion. So 2 extra teams get relegated and the remaining 14 team outside the "big 4" have 2 less revenue-earning home fixtures, thereby preserving the status quo of the big remaining big and the small remaining small. This is similar, but not quite as extreme, as Martin Edwards statement when he was chairman of the wankers that smaller clubs are bleeding the game dry and, for the sake of the game, they should be put to sleep.

By then, most of the Prem had realised that Ligue 1 was a rich source of talent (especially African talent). In the 'good old days' Wenger had first-pick, at very low prices, of a whole lot of ace players. Then he found that other Prem clubs were eager buyers, prices escalated, and the "Arsenal/Wenger magic" had lost it's lustre.

I dont know. I guess it depends on whether you believe that Wenger was overachieving with Arsenal. I think from about 2010 onwards, this was absolutely not the case.

He wasn't overachieving but he was achieving about right with the squad he had. It isn't good enough for the top 4 and it won't be again next season unless they invest really heavily. Much like us I think they have a decent 11 but behind that nothing. They are ****ed in my opinion.

And who’s fault is that? I think Wenger must take some of the blame in them slowly going backwards for about 10 years now.

The stats above in the graphic say why, if Arsene had 1.7bn Abramvich has spent at Chelsea or the 1bn City have spent or the 700m United have spent I think they would be right in the mix every season.

They have spent some money over the last few years on players like Ozil, Sanchez, Aubumeyang (sp?). Id actually say their biggest flop was not competing with Leicester for the title a couple of years back. It was there to be won and neither Spurs nor Arsenal put up much of a fight.

Ill guess well see what happens with the new manager. If at all possible, they should try for Simeone - he will bring them success.

Caused his own demise due to his early success. The Invicibles team were an impossible blueprint to follow and wont happen again for years, much in the same way Leicester won the league.

Moved them from Highbury to a new stadium, years before Spurs, Chelsea or Liverpool even got close to planning new staidums. In this time he kept them in the top 4, reached Champions league last 16s, won the odd FA Cup and generally played attractive football.

Combine this with rarely spending big on players to help balance the books in order to pay for the stadium, he did an unbelievable job.
