His new coach at his last club moved him deeper but he used to play up the pitch. He just wants to be on the ball floating in the middle. He’s not good enough at tackling in this league to play as a holder.

You don’t have to be a ‘holder’ to play deeply.

He clearly doesn’t want to do that.
You can just see it. He’s not going to sit there and spray balls it doesn’t happen in this league.

You don’t have to only sit there just spraying balls too. Max proved himself capable of intercepting better than any other player in Germany last season. The premier league isn’t faster to an extent that he’d be completely incapable of it here.

Quite he had similar stats to Yo but that was in a three. a) he has to get comfortable with the speed of the league and b) we have to bulk his upper body up.

TBF to him, he's always posting gym vids on his IG. Seems to be doing a fair bit of weight work.

He made a very sharp interception on Sunday, in the second half. He does like to pick the ball up quite deep, though. Gets all over the pitch and often seems to tire in the second half, unsurprisingly. I guess the real surprise should be midfielders who come from foreign leagues and can handle the Premier straight away - such as Luka.

We did well on Saturday because the best 3 performances on the pitch were in our midfield, you could probably throw Townsend in and make it 4. Luka was the best of those.

Given we are always going to play Wilf, a striker and Luca then its three from Kouyate, Jimmy Mc, Max, Schluppy and Andros. None of them deserve to miss out frankly so it slightly depends on who we play and how we play. Kouyate, Jimmy and Schluppy are the defensive options, Andros and Max the attacking but something has to give.

Max sadly loses out because he's small and a liability in the air at set pieces etc so its likely he's going to be used from the bench in the main.

Andros in my view is lucky to always be picked but if you play on the break he's very useful. i do think always playing two wingers is part of our problem, the reason why our strikers are always so isolated and why the midfield has to concentrate on defending through the middle. AWB and PVA offer good width so why do we always need two wingers? perhaps the other midfielders deserve a go and we should play through the middle especially when its clear that Batman doesn't really like a ball in the air, he wants it to feet.

Why do we have to have three defensive options? Freedman used to get absolutely slated for going in that direction, and rightly so. If Kouyate/McArthur and Luka isn't enough as a defensive mid pairing to allow a more creative midfielder we deserve to go down quite frankly.

Is that because we are so dangerous and have scored so many goals from set pieces, or how good we are at defending them?

I would also argue that in the 3 from you need to include another striker making it 3 from 6.

It does mean however that Roy has and should use 3 good subs a game.

Only three places up for grabs.

Always when fit:
Guaita
AWB Tomkins Sakho PVA
Luka
Andros Wilf

So Macca, Kouyate, Schluppy and Max (forgetting Jairo) after two midfield berths.
Christian, Batsman, Ayew and Sako (forgetting Connor) after third attacker role.

Macca and Schluppy follow Roy's instructions and he likes them.
Kouyate is arguably our best all round midfielder on his day.
No wonder Max can only make sub!
I think his best role is when we need to get the best out of Wilf, coming on where when we need response in the second half and linking up with him (and PVA and Schluppy.
