Still, we signed two pretty decent keepers that summer.
Named one of my goldfish Nico after him.

As mentioned above, Myhre and Nico were two very good goalkeepers at that level. I still think Kiraly in that premier league season was better than those two however.

This season puts to bed the ridiculous theory that whoever took over from Jules would have no chance of winning over fans.

The reason others struggled because they were either crap (wayne) didn't want to be here (Mandanda) or were just average/not an upgrade (McCarthy)

Sorry Wayne, you're going to be picking splinters out your arse for a while

So true. All the more impressive given that we haven’t had a consistent centre back pairing all season

Whilst this is no doubt true, I think it is also a 2-way thing. Under Roy the defence have also been very good and we have good defensive midfielders screening the back 4. That in turn helps the keeper.

Any keeper playing under Pardew and a less organised defence was much more likely to struggle. Hennessey was actually not bad under Allardyce and Hodgson when we had a solid, organised defensive unit in front of him. Same when he plays for Wales.

He has won over the fans with some outstanding performances and replacing Hennessey, which also pleased a lot of fans. Poor old Wayne had a tough gig taking over from a club legend, after McCarthy was moved out. He knew he wasn't first choice as Mandanda showed up for a few games, but he was put back between the sticks and carried on.

Henno is a good keeper and we are lucky to have him as a number 2. No doubt about that - it's just that Guiata has that certain je ne sais quoi that daHenn lacks.

But he didn't take over from Speroni. Obviously being very good helps but I do think Wayne got a slightly harder ride due to the fact Speroni was still a viable option.

Yes all goalkeepers do, but what error has he made that led to a goal in the last 12 months?

I genuinely can't think of one.

The only one that crops to mind, and I can't even recall who it was against, was when he dropped to his knees and the ball was smashed over him. I think this is a trait with modern keepers though, keep low to get down quicker, which VG does do exceptionally well to be fair!

He's also often a literal number 2 in matches. It's why Wayne is not loved like so many of our past keepers. Vicente is probably benefitting in the eyes of fans because he's slightly mad but also a phenomenal shot stopper. I'm a bit surprised he doesn't have a song already.

Phenomenal keeper. The only slight weakness is distribution with his left peg.

Maybe our best ever.

Brilliant keeper. Difference between a relegation battle and mid table safety.
