"An energetic if perhaps niche campaign to ensure the chimes of Big Ben sound at the moment of Brexit on 31 January appears doomed after Commons authorities played down the idea, while a funding plan promised by Boris Johnson to pay for it turned out to not exist."

21 August 2017: Start of 4-year silencing of the chimes during maintenance and repair work to the clock mechanism, and repairs and improvements to the clock tower building. During this time, dials, hands, and lights will be removed for restoration, with at least one dialówith hands driven by an electric motoróleft intact, functioning, and visible at any given time. Plans also include installing a lift. The bells, however, will still chime for events such as New Year's Eve and Remembrance Day.

If you pop up there at any point on the hour, will you hear Big Ben? NO

Its costs a lot of money to enable it to chime, they do it for NYE and Rememberence Sunday. The CAN do it for the 31st but will not pay for it.

Maybe a cohort of brexiters could scale the tower in protest, and mark the occasion with a dozen screaming splats? Laugh? I nearly shat..

Lovely bunch Johnson and Workshop’s Tories...

Alf Dubs summoned to meet three Home Office ministers and seven officials hoping he will drop his Lords amendment which seeks to force the government to maintain protections for child refugees.
Curiously large government delegation.
He refuses.

I don't believe Boris promised any such thing. In the interview I saw he suggested that if Brexit Supporters wanted the bells to chime they should start a go fund group. He said nothing about him or the government starting a fund.

Like the vast majority of Brexit supporters I will be quietly celebrating at home with family and friends and will open a few bottles of fine English Sparkling (champagne method) wine.

I entirely believe that he might well have promised anything or said anything, with no intention of following through, as thats basically his entire MO
