Izmir (Smyrna), had a very large Greek population, and the Turks 'took their revenge'. The Royal Navy rescued some fleeing (Izmir) Greeks, but didn't attempt to intervene.
Interesting factoid: Mustapha Kemal, blue eyes and brown hair, was born in Thesalloniki (Greece).

Maybe you didn't read my opening line where I referred to 'someone in the Fanatics zone ... waving a Greek flag when Tosun came on'. So it is quite a stretch of imagination, that someone in the middle of the HF section in the Holmesdale end (that well known away supporters end at Selhurst Park) was waving in support of Arsenal's Greek defender when our Turkish substitute came on.

I think I know what is far fetched, but if it were the case it would highlight a terrible piece of stewarding!

Anyway I'm sure you were just being mischievous in your suggestion

If we lose football grounds as neutral ground politically, we lose a lot more than we realise.

Really? So many fans at clubs up and down the country have that weird ‘Glasgow Rangers’ link - All political. Seen a Palace/Rangers flag at some grounds. Horrible.

It was me, nothing to do with the HF, I'm a Greek and I stand against a player that supports a army that violates our airspace everyday and signs illegal deals with Libya ignoring our islands despite occupying a third of Cyprus and trying to drill in its EEZ‘

Hope this helps.
This does help, thanks very much

I don't want to get into a discourse about who the bad guys are in that region, but this guy says he'll support the team just not Tosun, and then takes an action that could affect the whole team. If the HF allow this to continue within their ranks it isn't going to contribute to supporting the team.

Jeez. Why should Cenk Tosun have to bear the brunt of protests against Turkey, especially from Palace 'fans'? If one of us who happens to be British ever plays any sport abroad are we fair game for anyone who wants to protest against anything Britain has ever done in the past? No wonder there are wars all over the place, modern society is so intolerant of everything.

Will he support Sørloth if he comes back though? Maybe not as bad for a Norwegian saluting Turkish troops?

Can’t speak directly for the HF, but I’m pretty close to many and have met several Panionos guys that have come over from Athens.

I think it’s quite clear that most Palace fans don’t mix political/religious/racial views with their support of the club.

It’s been a feature of following Palace, on and off the pitch for around 50 years for me.

It would be a great shame if our support starts to implode over a faux pas that does not reflect on the ethos of CPFC.

For me, that ethos makes us a fully inclusive club, within reason. If anybody wants to make an issue out of this situation and inflame it beyond what has already happened, then it’s a very sad time for Crystal Palace FC.

I think that the celebration in question is actually in honour of former Palace legend, Adebayor.
