My comment was in the context of him being at Palace in the Premier League - look a few pages back for a more nuanced view from me.

'it would be boring if they won every time right?'

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die, to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end

The same Wilf when played centrally/up top went 15 odd games last term without a goal or an assist (and his body language didn't look great). When he reverted out wide again, he hit form and started producing what we know he is capable of.

Indeed. And Academy wise, it's hardly a failure if players end up with decent enough careers at lower league level.

I werent having a dig - I was just saying that he is perhaps better than not very good

I would say that our adjective for our academy/development players first foremost is to get them good enough to make a career out of the game- Ideally with us but if not then filtering down the pyramid after learning at Palace is good.

In Freddie case he seems to be doing that pretty well IMO.

If Ladapo was 18, I might think differently. But he's 24, nearly 25.

You're right, players can surprise but this is an entirely different era of football. The best young players are usually snapped up by the very best clubs at young ages. Some obviously fall through the net but not many who do go on to play at the very top level.

I'm currently reading No Hunger in Paradise by Michael Calvin (buy it if you're interested in youth football to any level) and there was a stat that 0.01% of kids who come into an academy at 12/13 etc end up playing professionally. It's a minuscule number.

I really like Levi Lumeka, I think he has *something* about him. Ladapo doesn't really have an outstanding attribute, he's just OK at everything. Lumeka has pace, scores goals from the wing and gets himself in good positions. He creates space for other players as well. Will he make it at Palace? If De Boer was still in charge I'd say he'd have a decent chance, now I'm not so sure. It's not necessarily always because the players aren't good enough, but to do with the fact they are unlikely to be given an opportunity - which can halt their progress. Unfortunately Palace's academy hasn't produced good enough players for our Premier League squad. The best of the bunch recently are Boateng and Kaikai. That Kaikai is not even being talked about says a lot. I think he's a Championship standard winger - if we go down I'd happily have him in our squad playing games.

The current first and second-year pros are good, but they are stifled by a lack of loan opportunities. Luke Dreher needs to bulk up and stay free of injury. Do that and he's got a chance. Kian Flanagan needs to learn the mental side of the game - a loan is important for him next season to develop mentally and mature. He has the technical ability and he has the physical upper body strength but needs to work on his head. Nya Kirby is obviously a huge talent. It's unfortunate they are all CMs. Joe Hungbo is interesting the best clubs, and interesting England.

Predicting the future of academy footballers is an incredibly difficult thing to do. I'm not saying I'm right, I just give my opinions and add in what I hear from people who have involvement in the game in some way.

It's been a long time since Palace had kids in the national team at any level, now they have several. There are four in the U15s involved in England training camps (including a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old who is attracting interest from top clubs), there is an U16 keeper who has been named on the bench for an England 16s game last year, there's a Northern Irish youth GK, there's Flanagan playing Ireland 19s, Kirby playing England 17s (gone to the World Cup). In the 18s there is Hungbo attracting England's interest, Brandon Aveiro (a 16 who plays up from time-to-time) attracting attention from Portugal and England. Then there is Nathan Young-Coombes who left for Chelsea who was also at the England U15s camp.

From what I've heard, Rob Quinn is doing a fantastic job as lead youth development phase coach and those 15s in England's sights are all kids he coaches/coached.

Bringing it back to Ladapo though, this isn't a kid whose development is unpredictable, he's a man who has been out on loan in the football league and played reasonably well. Hiram Boateng played loads of games and ended up in League Two. I can only go by what I've seen and heard and for me, this isn't likely to be a Jamie Vardy/Ian Wright scenario.

I've got no doubt I'll be wrong about players, but I'm reasonably confident that won't be the case with Ladapo. Cue a debut and goal tomorrow. I will always support players on the pitch though, so if he gets on I'll be hoping he proves me wrong.

TL;DR: Lumeka has potential, Ladapo is not going to be the next Ian Wright/Jamie Vardy
Good post - But I guess not gonna be the next Ian Wright but maybe he could be the next Glenn Murray/ Steve Claridge etc? In the sense that he keeps plugging away he could be in the championship at 28 and then who knows.

Exactly, it'll probably never be remembered in the grand scheme of things but the club can be proud of the fact we gave him an opportunity.

To think 3 years ago he had a decent but not mind blowing record at Margate and now is plying his trade in League One is impressive and I'm sure he's delighted at that.
