Crystal Palace FC (Women) are delighted to announce two new summer signings, with Leeta Rutherford and Amy Goddard both joining the Eagles for the upcoming Championship season.

Having previously represented Millwall and Brighton and Hove Albion, Rutherford, who is comfortable in the centre of midfield or defence, joins the club from fellow Championship side Lewes FC, and did in fact play against Palace twice last season.

The Eagles’ other new addition arrives from Yeovil Town Ladies, with Goddard moving to Palace after a year with the Glovers in the Women’s Super League, in which the centre-back made 14 appearances for the club.

Manager, Dean Davenport, said: “We are delighted to welcome both girls to the Palace family and believe they will be a strong addition to our team this season. Exciting times ahead.”

Crystal Palace have signed Republic of Ireland international Cherelle Khassal from Chichester City on a two-year deal.

Khassal scored 18 goals in all competitions last season and manager Dean Davenport revealed his excitement in Palace securing her signature.

“I’m really pleased to have captured the signature of Cherelle, Davenport told the club’s website. There are some really good players in the Women’s Premier League and Cherelle is at the top of that list. I now feel the time is right to give Cherelle the opportunity to step up and use her qualities at Crystal Palace.

“We are building for a strong team and all being well, we will be looking to challenge for a top half finish – watch this space!”

Should the women's game be subsidised? How can wages even be a thing when attendances are equivalent to a poorly-supported Isthmian side, but with much lower ticket prices?

I'm sure some other club will stump up the cash, and then go bust because it's unsustainable. That happens in men's non-league too, there always some club that thinks it can be the next Fleetwood Town by paying wages they can't possibly afford.

What did the Zaha donation money go on last season? Was some of that used to subsidise wages?

I agree.

I’ve followed the women’s side, along with the other loyal fans who watched the team’s rise, since the input of CPFC2010.

This is basically the same issue as the start of last season, where people think that just because the Palace women come under the same auspices as the men’s club, there should be more than sufficient to compete with wages and players of other clubs connected to major Premiership or even Championship clubs.

The basic fact is that there is very small revenue, if any at all from our home games at Bromley, the crowds are usually in the low hundreds, many get in free or for discounted prices because of their CPFC season tickets - and of course Bromley FC have to paid and any food and drink revenue stays with the Bromley too.

This is not to say CPFC do not back the women’s team, because the facts are there that they do put in a substantial amount of cash, I would hazard a guess it several hundred thousands each season, probably not in the millions that some other clubs are allocated - plus money from various sponshorships.

But to me - and I’m saying this as very committed fan, the club should grow organically and steadily build the support and finances to go with it, I can’t really tell you with enough contempt how I loathe clubs like Man U and West Ham who have very basically bought top level players and status without going the normal route of virtually every other club and actually earning promotion and building their club infrastructure and playing staff and management over a number of years.

It’s quite obvious that women’s football is still very much a niche market and many people who follow the men’s game simply do not have the same level of interest, if any at all in the women’s teams of exactly the same club they follow.

That is an issue that may take many years to improve, even with the exposure in publicity that this year’s women’s World Cup has produced, I doubt that will automatically translate into higher attendances, especially at Palace’s level - I see it as very gradual process, where hopefully, in Palace’s case, the team will steadily develop, as it has done anyway and the support will increase and the viability of the club with it.

Do you think if the club provided a one time injection of a few million to buy their way into the premier league they would be able to sustain themselves in the premier league? I can't imagine there is much growth potential not being in the premier league.

There's not much growth potential being in the Premier League, either. Where are the crowds of 2,500+ actual paying customers that you need to sustain a professional squad going to come from?

The World Cup viewing figures are all well and good, but how many people are going to actually get off their arse and pay to go to a game as a result?

My granddaughter is just about old enough to attend her first football match. My son and I go to Palace home matches together as we have done since he was 5, 36 years ago. In the area we have season tickets at Selhurst it would be very difficult for us to buy her a ticket for a game this coming season. After watching and enjoying the Women's World cup we are not sure if we should take her to Selhurst for her first match or instead to one of the Women's matches. It will certainly be easier to ensure we are all together and maybe for a young girl we should take her to see the Women play and encourage her to support them. ?

Thought of that one but a family birthday party to attend. Anyway its not so much getting a ticket for a premier league or cup game that creates the problem. The issue is should we encourage her to support the women's team or the men's first
