Cheikhou Kouyate

As he’s both captain and centre back for Senegal, I wonder if we have him earmarked to move there if Scott Dan was to go. He must be doing a pretty good job there, five clean sheets More proof that we really need to focus any money on aright back and strikers/wingers maybe

I got the impression he was playing as full back/defensive midfielder rather than cb, I think Kouilbaly and Sabaly were the actual cbs - not paying that close attention yesterday as I was half watching the cricket and to be frank, Senegal were actually rarely under defensive pressure in the games I have seen.

Sabaly has gone to left back in this competition and Kouyate has been playing centre back alongside Koulibaly. Saw Cheikhou playing CB a few years ago when WHU won 1-0 at Selhurst. He was impressive that day.....still not sure of him there though!

Agreed. Even with an aging defence, we have CB cover with Kouyate and the versatility of Ward and Kelly able to swap RB or CB if required. A low cost RB is fine but the bulk of the AWB money must go to the midfield / wings / strikers, depending on whether Wilf stays or not.

I have suggested this before myself, should Sakho be sold then we would have a ready made replacement in Kouyate as a ball playing composed Centre Back, who i feel is better equipped playing in that position than midfield.
Also it then creates an opportunity to bring in a better more creative option like Mooy or Sari to play alongside Luka in midfield.

You must have missed Sakho being captain above Scott Dann

Many West Ham fans thought he was a better centre back than a CDM. Could understand why, his ability on the ball (his biggest weakness) would matter less.

Its not just me, Woosie agrees he had a poor season 2018/19. FWIW wouldnt mind Kouyate as a centre back or even as a holding mid alongside a passer were Milivojevic to go. But he was signed to play alongside Luka and he is not a good enough footballer to play there.

Think he’s fine against the top 6 home and away, and away against the best of the rest (Leicester, Wolves etc). I.e, games where the main job for midfielders is winning the ball so we can counter. Any game where we’re consistently keeping possession, and he shouldn’t be in midfield.
