Thanks Guys. I have always thought this one of the most pleasant and supportive threads on the BBS.

I used to be a serious runner when young, but even when in competition have always found runners far more supportive and respectful of each other than is the case with most other sports.

I guess ultimately we all recognize the commonality of the struggle against ourself and the clock/distance even if racing against others.

Yep.
I also think that with running, until you're at a certain level, you're only really racing yourself.

Everyone has their own goals and achievements for doing it.

And this thread is perfect. You have people of variance different levels, and I don't think I've ever seen any arguments. Just the odd bit of jealousy that some can go so quick!

Once you start parkrun you'll find a nemesis (in a friendly way). That person that always seems to finish 10-20 seconds ahead of you that you'll try and catch week on week.

This is so true!

When I started out at Dulwich, there was a guy called Jon who, despite me going a little bit faster each week, also went a little bit faster. Always about 10 seconds in it. Then one Saturday he had a hangover, and the tables turned.

I had a guy called Dave. Was always about 20 seconds behind him, but coming around for the final km I was right on his heels. Kept with him hoping for a new PB, didn't look at my watch, crossed the line and was 10 seconds shy of a PB. We'd never spoken before but I went up to him and asked him what time he made it and he informed me that he'd stopped to tie his shoe lace round one of the bends when I couldn't see him. I was very disappointed.

I remember doing Park Run with my brother when I first took running up, and we had a friendly bet on it.

His plan was to set off at a fast pace, and either knacker me out, or build himself a lead that I couldn't get back. I remember at the 2k mark his face when he realised he was going to need to keep that pace for another 10 minutes at least, and then as I passed him

Missed it last week as hungover after my birthday. Back on it today. 24:10. Sub 24 was on but I had nothing left in the tank for the last 500 metres.

Good luck Woosie! Half marathon scares me still. Sticking to the 5k for the immediate future.

Thanks for all the support and advice everyone. I annihilated my target which was 2 hours.

Got round in 1:51:55 and I am over the moon with that. So, so happy.

Have managed to raise a fair amount for CALM in the process To view the link you have to Register or Login (mods please delete the link if this isn't allowed)

The woman doing the massage at the end said I need to tone my calves more as they weren't particularly toned, and that it also puts pressure on my hamstrings and potentially then my back. Said my hamstrings were very tight (which i kind of knew tbh).

That's a good time for a first half marathon. Pacing yourself at that distance is always difficult because courses vary and you don't know the terrain. Re training the advice from real experts was one which I found difficult to adhere too. If you want to improve performance significantly you need to do interval training on the treadmill or roads whilst practicing - sprint, slow, sprint, slow etc. I did too much treadmill based stuff so felt the knee pain on the road races and was too prone to treadmill running at a constant pace.

I tried one at around 5pm and struggled badly even though I kept it to a slow pace. Gave up after 5k. Was a stupid idea, particularly after a few weeks off.
