FFP - Transfers - Explanation?

Does anyone actually understand in detail why we are being restricted on signing players due to FFP.

This seems to be a common explanation rolled out at the moment for why we are not spending decent money on transfers - however can this be explained how this has come to pass.

I was thinking about this recently so assuming that you are only allowed to spend a % of your turnover on wages/transfers each year.

Surely a transfer fee becomes an asset in accounting terms so is not realised as an expense. Therefore we are better off spending higher on transfer fees but lower on wages as the wages are the main cost on a financial accounts that contribute to FFP.

Is the reason we are nearly in breach because since we joined the PL we have signed a large number of players who have been on reasonable wages and not been able to sell them on to reduce the wage bill - alot of our players seem to stick around until their contract runs out and we never recoup a fee for them and in the mean time they sit there costing us a packet each week.

To name but a few;

Mutch
Puncheon
Williams
CYL
Delaney
Sako
Cabaye
Campbell
Ledley
Mariappa
Chamakh
Flamini
Adebayor

Every single one of these players went on a free or were released - we may have even had to pay some of them off to get them out the club and off the wage bill. Not to mention the number of players still on our books who currently are not contributing to the side.

Not to mention our net spend since June 2014 is £126m this is 5th only behind City/Utd/Arsenal/Everton and in that time we have only recouped £55m in transfer fees.

Remember seeing somewhere that for every £1 we earn, 80p goes on wages? Might be something to do with that?

I think you have to write the fee off over the length of the contract.

Obvious really as the player is worth nothing when the contract runs out.

FFP stops you spending more than you earn over a period of 3 years. We are currently at the end of that 3 year cycle. So in theory we could spunk the next theee years budget this summer and then not fiend after that.

Promoted sides can spend a lot as the gap between thier championship costs and premiership earnings is vast. But over the first three years this creeps up on you.

Expect us to have more cash to play with in the summer

FPP Is a nice ongoing excuse not to be able to sign players used by hdeagle, Windsorarmchair and parish. It’s like Clinton’s shoulder injury, Colin saying current fans are the best he’s had and looking to get 2-3 players in.

No need to listen to anyone, just look at the last set of accounts. It is clear that

- we are at limit of Salary cap
- virtually all our income is eaten up by salaries
- With transfer fees being amortised over life if contract and no significant transfer out since Bolasie, our p and l is not in good shape

It’s in good enough shape to pay healthy salaries to Parish and all. Anyone else remember him saying he would never take a penny out of the club

I understand all that but I still don’t get how Bournemouth are doing what they’re doing. They’ve spent big and must be paying big wages to a number of players, just as we are. Lerma, solanke, ake, begovic etc must be commanding decent salaries, yet with half our gate receipts

I assume they’re simply flouting FFP. Have they been fined? Seems they were fined for their championship spending, not since. They must be sailing close to the wind.

If only we could have signed better players for less money and lower wages. Life isn't that easy! We are near the end of a 3 year cycle and whilst the plan would surely have been to avoid a squeeze at the end of the cycle there have been periods where we've had to spend through the nose to avoid relegation. Fans were screaming for those big transfers then. They need to be paid for now. Of course some signings haven't worked out, but some have. We all hope to do better over the next cycle and the more we can think long term without the fear of going down (so no Defoe type signings now) the better. Most importantly though I want to still be a premier league club then, so the same pressures will remain.

Absolutely, and let’s try to have some perspective, it hasn’t been all bad:

Sakho (expensive but one of our best players)
Luka, our captain and integral
PVA, top player
Tomkins, solid as a rock (apart from the aberration that was the Brighton match)
Benteke (off the boil but saved us first season)

Surely the three year cycle is a rolling period of analysis - this year plus the two previous. Therefore there is no “end” it just smooths the fluctuation a little.

And does the three year concession apply to the cap on wage increases? I can’t see how that works.

We simply pay some larger salaries than we really should, but that was the price in keeping Wilf and getting Benteke and Sakho. And we just havent recouped transfer fees. That strategy has been poor.

Talking about gates etc is slightly irrelevant until you really have much larger crowds. The TV money overshadows that element. With the state of our ground we don't have the extra commercial revenue that others do either.
