Of course there's something to lose. It's too close down the bottom and every place is worth millions. Kelly and Dann till the end of the season if needed

Nice idea but I imagine we will see Kouyate at CB before Woods.

Yea I agree. With every place in the premier league worth an extra £2m (?) I donít think Parish would be beat pleased seeing young lads playing when £60k a week plus seniors are available.

I donít agree with it, just thinking from a business point of view unfortunately.

Hope he does get a game.

I think it’s more important to test Kouyate at Centre Back, seeing as he is now 4th choice for that position.

I wouldnt like to see a pairing of him and Sakho though, that would be chaos.

I have to say I would love to see Woods get an opportunity. He has regularly been on the bench recently with Dann. With Sakho injured and Tomkins also now injured, Dann & Kelly are the 2 starting CBs. This suggests Woods is next in line. With our history of injuries for CBs there is a good chance Woods will get a chance.
Now is also the perfect opportunity. He trains and travels with the first 11 so will feel like part of the set up. We are safe from relegation.
I completely get the logic of £2m per place in the League and Parish's desire to maximise the income but the counter argument is that developing a young player can be worth millions too. AWB might easily be worth £30m plus. Now I am not suggesting Woods will become a super star but even an ordinary PL player is worth at least £10m.

Borrowdale got some abuse because he didn't convince everybody, Watson got some boos when he went to take a pen after missing one (he scored), but he was already a regular, Routledge was booed when he threw a strop (and his shirt on the ground), he wanted away to Spurs, where they had just signed Lennon, and he promptly got a bad injury. Borrowdale was the only novice player to get grief (out of those examples).

Routledge to Spurs is up there with the John Bostock saga, as "a lesson young players should learn".

He is an exciting prospect and in that Cup game showed he has what it takes, but that game was very different to stepping out in the premiership. We must show patience and simply bring him on for 10 minutes or so in a couple of games this season so as to get a feel of the atmosphere and premiership football, and then pre season games will tell us more of his progress.

In a meaningless game like Bournemouth he should be worth a look. Maybe even trying him against a desperate Cardiff side could be interesting to see if he can cut it but his career could get destroyed by the likes of City or Arse if they go on a rampage.

I'm just going to play a bit of devil's advocate. Before I start, I'd like to see him given a go - it's got to be worthwhile to see academy products in the first team, just to learn where they stand.

However, the first question I'd like to raise is Jairo Riedewald. Is he still seen as a central defender? If so, is it more appropriate for him to play and stake his claim? I don't know.

Secondly, if SW was to play, would it be better to give him Cardiff or Arsenal? Yes, the Welsh are a much easier proposition but if he has a torrid time against them I suspect he'll be written off: not good enough for a relegated side, so not good enough. Given his inexperience and their desperate fight to survive (or to prove a point if they're already down) this game could be a tougher one than some see it as being. Against a top six team, on the other hand, anyone might struggle. We'd be more forgiving on his mis-steps and more inclined to note his good moments.

As I said, devil's advocate - I'm not saying this is what Roy should do but I think it should be in the calculations.

The risk with playing Woods is that he won't have one of our two main central defenders alongside him. Too risky.

Agree would not play him agaist city or arsenal could distroy his confidence seen him quite a bit in 23s not sure his up to that jump in class most under 23 games are 18 19 years old playing agaist each other .

If we have two games in a week, it may actually be sensible to play him alongside Kelly in the mid-week fixture. Would prefer not to risk Dann playing every 3 days.

I would go with Kouyate and Kelly against City, but all for giving Woods a go towards the end of the season.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you yourself have damned him with faint praise, saying that he might be good enough to play professional football at some level at some point (paraphrasing). That said, I don't think you saw AWB coming and he's arguably now one of the best defensive right backs in the world.

And pace (top speed rather than acceleration I think) can be improved to extent, probably more so true with Woods as he won't have fully grown into his body yet.

I also said he was the most likely to debut next when someone asked on here a couple of weeks before he debuted who might get a chance next.

Think it's fair to say I did see Wan-Bissaka coming but nobody could or would have predicted just how well he has done.

Re Woods, he's probably going to play in the football league, I'm not sure if he's good enough for the Premier League, but given how little risk there is, the fact he's debuted in the cup and has been with the squad for most weeks, I see no reason not to play him as it will give a much better idea of where his level is at the moment.

Play Scott Dann for the rest of the season and get him back up to speed. Hes 32 not 38.

Remember people saying the same about Glenn Murray finished 4 years ago....
