You talk about financial prudence, but you'd have us replace him with another player which would involve either a transfer fee or signing on bonus - that's not very prudent. Getting a striker better than Wickham wouldn't come cheap, that's just the reality of the market.

Or he was only given very limited minutes in a bid to ease him back carefully from serious injury. That'd make more sense considering he was just given another contract. I can't imagine Roy said "I don't fancy him, he's not going to play" and Steve responded " too bad, we're renewing him anyway".

Was surprised to hear this news but maybe Roy has seen enough in training to suggest the recovery is on for him.

He has obviously been protected and taken out of the firing line to be ready to go from the start of next season.

It would not surprise me though to see him loaned out to a Championship side to get some regular games before coming back to us.

The extension to the contract is probably more like us protecting an asset rather than allowing the contract to run down to nothing. For this to happen we must of seen enough in training to think he has a good chance of a reasonable recovery.

Good news though hopefully we see some of the old Connor before he got injured.

Player club knows, and has monitored for the past 3 years is offered a contract extension.

“Crazy” “Madness” “horrible”

Says the BBS.

Mind you, almost as expected as the exaggerated reaction to this, will be Parish’s ‘It’s like a new signing’ spin.

I want see one of Wickham or Benteke make way for a new striker option. Given this contract development I hope we are working towards getting Benteke off the books, even if it’s for a few million.

Or he's been trying to bring him back slowly so he's not injured again. He actually didn't have too bad of an injury record before he got to us. He's the best footballing CF we have and is ok at heading the ball in the box. I think out of the forwards we have he's the one that suits Roy's style of play. Bentekes not super with his feet and give and goes while Bats is useless outside of the penalty box. Getting Bats back would be great but ensuring we actually have at least two strikers at the club to begin the season with is an usual step for us.

He's only 26! Has lots of potential and has probably taken a pay cut. Murray is 35 and still banging them in. If (and it's a big if) Wickham can get back to full fitness there is no reason he can't have a similar career to Murray.

Seemingly he has come back too early each time he has been injured so it made perfect sense for Roy to prefer Michy and Benteke.

Wickham will never be as good as Murray.

Just read someone on Twitter saying that the same people making the big fuss over the new contract will be exactly the same people making a big fuss if next year he started scoring and his contract run out at the end of the season or if he went down a league and started scoring at a championship club.

Sums it up for me. Sensible move for me offering him a new contract.

The number of people on here who think they can take better squad decisions than Roy Hodgson and those around him is surpassed only by the number who think they can read their minds.

I rate a fit Connor . I hope we have realised that some players can provide a very effective , 60 or 30 mins rather than having to play 90. I also hope that the contract has number of first team games played triggers. But I didnt see this coming

Right decision to protect our asset
