Sam Woods

Assuming James Tomkins is out for the rest of the season (no idea if he is or not), then we could do worse than give Sam Woods a chance at CB.

This isn't about throwing in a young player for the sake of it, there are genuine reasons why it might be worth doing.

He has travelled with the squad for pretty much every game this season, and has been on the bench several times. Also he came on against Boro in the League Cup.

As much as Scott Dann has been incredible for us, he has lost any pace he had due to his injury, and so far doesn't look like a Premier League CB anymore unfortunately.

We are to all intents and purposes safe from relegation, so there is little to lose. People will argue that he is young and inexperienced and it's a big risk to play a youngster. But it's a big risk to play a 32-year-old who has spent six months out through injury as well, it's a risk to play Martin Kelly who has made many errors recently (I like Kelly btw). There is always risk in football.

The upsides are greater, as I said, it's not as though Woods has only been involved with the U23s. There were clubs interested in loaning him in January.

If he does well, then there is a good chance he would have a higher profile and therefore a better chance of a decent loan move next season. It's very unlikely he's going to get a chance in the first-team regardless. If he doesn't do well, then you see that he has more development needed and it gives you a better idea of where that development is required.

I fully appreciate that it is difficult to put him in against Manchester City and Arsenal, but City's attack is rapid, Dann is not. I probably would go for Dann-Kelly, but it's worth considering. After that though, I don't see why not.

Obviously this could be redundant if Tomkins is actually fine.

Hi Woosie

Not clear who you were suggesting would play alongside him?
I assume it would be Kelly, despite his errors over Dann being slow?

You see more of the youngsters than most - so yes, why not try him out.
Try out a couple of different formations also.

Sorry, yes, alongside Kelly. Not advocating dropping Kelly as he is generally reliable but just has had a bad few weeks or so.

Ive seen Woods play u23s... he would have to play alongside Kelly...as he seems quite slow himself.
Id defo start him against Everton/Cardiff/Bournemouth. Palace boy as well.

he got injured and hasn't played for Kingstonian since despite being fit, so it's unclear. However, as it's a non-league loan he can be recalled at any time.

Tomkins injured his groin and ought to be back for Arsenal shouldn't he? I would not throw Woods to the wolves of Man City but fir the final three he might be worth a chance

AWB first three games, Spurs, United and Chelsea and he hit the ground running. Woodsy will believe he is good enough and wouldn't be daunted

his family are Palace through and through as well. Originally played for Selsdon juniors before signing for Palace when he was 12. He is a natural leader and captained the under-16s. Really hope it works out well for Woodsy

I'd love to see the youngsters play. Then again, given the vitriol directed against our players if they don't immediately perform well above the expected standard I dread to think what might happen if the lad makes a mistake.

All the more reason to play him at City if he is mentally tough enough. Nothing really to lose and we are expected to lose so he can really play with no fear. However if he isn't mentally strong you f
Don't want to throw him into a 3/4-0 defeat straight away.

I am not aware of us turning on iur academy players. I know people get frustrated with some of our players over a period of time/games but generally everyone is given a decent chance and encouragement. Especially the kids

You've obviously not seen what it was like for some of our youngsters when they played for the first team. I remember plenty of abuse, frustration, etc., over the years and not always after giving the lad time to settle in.

Plus, given the immense expectation of what new players should be doing right from the off I would be concerned.

I have noticed AWB drifting more centrally to cover more recently, I wonder if he would be a good option for CB in the next few weeks and Ward at RB?

If he is quite slow as you say , I hope ( in the Summer ) we can find a youngish player with bit of pace who can challenge for first team place next season .
Sakho is always going to miss a fair amount of the season and constant long term injuries will only compound this . Prior to this season , Tomkins has missed about a third of matches throughout his career and I am always concerned when he has to play more than 1 game a week .

Routledge & Watson have just spat their tea across the room. Some Palace fans are complete arseholes and would certainly snip at Woods if he made a mistake.

Dann and Kelly both did a good job yesterday when called upon. Personally I wouldn't be in a rush to play Woods and certainly not in the next two fixtures unless it is necessary.

It worked out fairly well for AWB, who had to immediately face Manchester United and did quite well.
