I have to confess I have gone a bit 'Watfordie' in terms of developing a strange fascination with Everton. I think it's the combination of just wanting to see a 'big' team go down and the general unlikeable, delusional fans and manager.

You cant give a squad number to a player, that is not contracted to the club. His old number 8 is left unused, so dont be surprised to see him sign a deal, if nothing better comes along.

If we can get a younger, long term option then great. But if we aren't getting who we want then I'd rather kouyate stayed. He'd have made it a different game yesterday playing deep with doucoure. His height is something we lack all over the pitch too.

If we've got someone lined up then great. If we have missed out on our top targets then having someone we know would do a good job next to doucoure wouldn't be a bad option.

would agree with this he would be better alongside Doucoure if we are to persist with Eze in a free role.Think he is a better option than either Luka or Hughes who are both slow.Would allow Schlupp to be an impact sub where he is likely to be most effective.

for all the contract extensions like benteke and wickham we had in the past why didnt we go with 2 years if that was the case for a very dependable and effective player like Kouyate seems a poor decision.

Window hasn’t ended yet. I suspect we will buy another centre midfielder. Might not have been able to do that if we had signed up Kouyate on biggish wages for another 2 years.

Not going for 2 years is exactly because of previous extensions (less so Wickham as the club was being protective of an injury struggling player, as we did with Dreher). We don’t want highly paid ageing players who have zero resale value.

We had Andersen & Guehi, we’re clearly tracking Richards, has extended Tomkins and had Ferguson coming back towards the squad. He was no longer needed as CB cover.

In midfield, we want to progress with ball carrying passing players. Doucoure showed enough on Friday to demonstrate he fits that mould. Kouyate doesn’t. As a one year fix if who we want isn’t available yet, fine, but we already have 4 players as midfield back ups - Schlupp, Milivojevic, Reidewald and Hughes. We need a starter and the £50-60k pw, plus signing fee for Kouyate would be better spent on the rebooted McArthur.
