Scotland to be first UK country to ban smacking

I wonder if we'll follow suit with this and also ban smacking. Whilst I was brought up in an era where you got a whacked bum if you were bad, I've always considered the use of physical discipline archaic. You could argue that the children in my era (and beyond) were more respectful than the children of these day but should smacking really be necessary to teach your child a lesson?

I can't say I've ever hit my Daughter and nor would I. How can you teach a child that hitting is wrong, if you then go on to hit them. Double standards.

I expect a reply to an effect of 'my parents smacking me never did me any harm' no doubt.

I think there is a bit off difference between smacking to tell them to stop being annoying and smacking to prevent them from doing stuff that may cause them to harm themselves.

If a toddler runs out into the road then a smack (not a ridiculous one) may be the best course of action to prevent this happening again.

I also don't believe in smacking children. All you teach them by doing so is that violence is a legitimate way to achieve your goals.

However, I'm not certain it requires specific legislation to prevent it, and I'm not sure it's an area the state should be directly involved in.

I kind of get your point, but there has to be other ways of educating a toddler than running into a road is wrong other than hitting them, albeit lightly. To have a long lasting mental affect on them if you did do that, then you would have to cause fright and pain and that's not right.

How does the negative impact on mental health, which is one of their main arguments, compare to the negative impact on mental health from Facebook?

Smacking your kids is a loss of control. Continued smacking of your kids can cause long term psychological problems, for everybody. I'm not sure if it needs legislation though, perhaps just more education.

I agree and there is a difference between smacking your child once or twice a year, and people who do it once or twice a day.

Am sure a conviction under this law showing up on a DBS check will preclude a lot of people from remaining in the jobs they do. Can we afford to lose doctors, nurses teachers etc etc because they used physical chastisement once or twice?

Think it is using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Not sure why you are asking me that, but is the comparison with Facebook strictly relevant here? I'd suggest that's a different argument.

Do you advocate the use of smacking for discipline then, GG?

Nevermind smacking, someone should have a word with the people over the road from us who both tend to scream at the top of their lungs at their kids, God knows what sort of psychological trauma those kids suffer. There is shouting at your kids then there is "Shut up you ******* little ****!" at really young kids.

Absolutely atrocious excuse for human beings.

The support services canít do anything unless someone brings this to their attention. If it happens frequently, you should consider doing that. Bear in mind that worse could be happening that you canít hear.

I do not think that it should be made an outright criminal offence.

There's also a difference between people who don't smack kids whatsoever & the two options you're giving above. I'm not sure why it appears that your "once or twice a year" reads like giving an abuser a pass, but I'm aware that written format doesn't always translate well.

Under what circumstances do you think it's 'okay' to smack a child out of interest?(assuming you do from the way I've read it, but could be wrong)

My father was a violent bully who would go to prison toute suite if he did what he did in this day and age. However why isn't it just dealt with as assault? We already have the laws to handle this, don't we?
