None of those scenarios are particularly appealing, but is your argument that this in itself justifies a 'by any means necessary' approach?

Interesting that Watford originally applied for Cat 1 Academy status, but when the Pozzo's came in, they asked for the application to be retracted and applied for Cat 3 instead. That would indicate to me they weren't prepared to invest in the Academy according to the EPPP conditions.

It's all very well for Watford fans to say their Academy is still up and running and doing well, but they have left themseves open to so many other Clubs coming in and cherry picking who they want at quite a young age.

Shame really - they had a very good Academy.

Spot on Barbara most of their fans are ignoring the good work their academy has done in the past, they are turning into Cardiff/Southampton

All I am saying is that only 6 months ago we were in serious danger of going bust... not necessariiy because of poor management but because we were not able to match other clubs in the championship with either a larger fanbase or with owners willing to build up massive debts to get success such as cardiff, forest and leicester.

Whilst a number of questions remain unanswered we have owners now who are renowned for being different and have acheived success with a similarly unfavourable historic fan base of infrastructure.

Nothing has changed re the Watford Academy, it is still up and running with the same level of investment as before. I cannot say that I know all the ins and outs of situation but if feedback from parents from kids already there is anything to go by they are happy with way the academy is performing and impressed particularly with the quality of coaching now in place.

What has really changed is that due to the better financial position of the club generally we are now able to give long contracts to young players such as Tommy Hoban, Sean Murray, Britt Ossombolong and Connor Smith. Means that they are probably rewarded and for the club makes sure if they do have to sell they won't be for peanuts.

Haven't your owners it something of a dubious past in relation to match fixing?

I know that this is very late but surely the issue is having a large amount of loan players from the same team, not the fact that they have loanees

So they should have been under a transfer embargo, signed 8 players that has been agreed gave them a sporting advantage but don't get a points deduction. Hmmmm...

From that - they would have been okay at the start of this season.

'A Football Disciplinary Commission found that the club should have been placed under a transfer embargo for 11 months from 26 September 2011.
The commission stated that Watford signed eight players in that time and although determining that the club gained a sporting advantage from those transfers, it did not deem a points deduction necessary.
Watford and Bassini, who sold the club to the Pozzo family in June, were found guilty of failing to inform the Football League of financial agreements set up with a company called LNOC.'

What Watford are doing I think we agree is not strictly wrong. If it were, they wouldn't be allowed to do it.

I think there are two tests here. The first is whether the rules will be changed next season to prevent a re-occurance. This won't stop Watford this year but it will show whether the authorities approve of this loophole or not. The second is whether HMRC will look at the rates charged and agree whether they are arms-length or not. (similar to Amazon, Strabucks, etc). If not then there's a tax charge.

This announcement today ignores what they are doing now.

Watford have been found guilty of ignoring the financial rules of the FL and in doing so gaining a footballing advantage - that usually results in a points deduction and they should be getting one IMO.

Look at how they clobbered Luton (Watford's big rivals) for finanical irregularities!

They can still sign players with permission from the league. Whatever that means.

This decision made by the Football League relates to charges made against the previous owner who was an incompetent idiot and should have got a life ban rather than the 3 years.

International loans are governed by FIFA so any change in the rules could potentially need their approval and that's unlikely as the whole international loan system was set up to aid youth development and is seen very much as a positive.

"Watford have been placed under transfer embargo"

"Under the terms of the embargo, Watford can still sign players with prior permission from league officials."

Surely that's contradictory.. you are either under embargo and not allowed to sign players or are allowed to buy and sell as normal

'eh?

They can still sign players with the league's permission.

This case refers to their previous owners.

If they get promoted it won't matter anyway!

HMRC most certainly won't look at the loan fees if they are too low. They would only care if they were too high. The Italian tax authorities might have a looksee though (it's the Italians who are losing out, after all).

Watford Placed Under Transfer Embargo

How on earth did they get away with this without any points deduction?
