I honestly think there was more hope about. Sound soppy, though.

Coal bunkers, coal fireplaces. I remember being switched from Algerian to North Sea Gas. The days of the talley man?

Michael Howard might have a lot to answer for, or whoever had their hand up is his back controlling his mouth.

Here is PwC's prediction at purchasing power parity. Be nice to Indonesia and Brazil it seems.

Why thank you. To be honest it was accurate, succinct and to the point. If you think the uk in the 70's was an exemplar of economic achievement, then there is clearly no point in my wasting my time any further.

Yes, I do. But you are seeing things through a prism. By the 1970s the UK had developed one of the world's largest economies. Of course, there was not the predominance there had once been but the fact remains that in comparison to most of the world the UK was brilliantly successful.

You were the one scoffing at Will's suggestion that we were one of the world's top trading nations when we joined the EEC. We were. We dealt with the collapse of manufacturing following opening of our markets to EEC competition and found new things to do. We also had the benefit of an oil and gas boom.

It would be civil of you to accept that we were and still are one of the great economies. Whether we continue to be post BREXIT remains to be seen.... hundreds of years of history suggests we will work it through.

You will find that historians and economists were looking through the same prism. By the 1970's the Uk economy was in decline. It faced structural challenges many at the time thought were insurmountable and these mainfetsed themselves in a host of ways, including repeated balance of trade and currency crises. Our productivity was declining along with our GDP. The gap between us and those competitors above us was growing, the gap between us and those snapping at our heels was narrowing. How anyone can claim that we entered the EU with a robust competitive economy is simply baffling.

Yes, the economy was comparatively large but it had grown over many decades within the shelter of the Empire and then Commonwealth trading block. When these went, we found competing with the likes of Japan , Germany, the US etc. a real problem. This is one reason why many favoured entering a new trading block. Even the short term palliative of North Sea Oil failed to prevent the rot in our manufacturing sector, which provided some 25% of our GDP in the early 70's and now contributes a little over 11%.

History suggests that in a world where economic might makes right, we are in for a very rough ride, particularly as those who have presided over our failure to invest and restructure will be calling the shots for a long time. And I'm sorry but I don't feel inclined to be civil to those who have dropped us in this mess.

I think he may have spoken of some positives of Brexit without ever fully endorsing it, publicly anyway.

He may not be now, of course, but I think he was more a Labour man in years gone by. Certainly Browett is fairly left of centre and strongly pro Europe from what I can tell.

I suppose if people don't like this, they don't like what Gina Miller is currently engaging in either......
