Hand on heart, he doesn’t have it all in the slightest.
He's the classiest left back I've seen at Palace since Ashley Cole. He has pace, technical ability, can pass and scores goals due to an amazing football brain to back it all up. He's a great attacking left back. Our problem is the fragility in front of him as he is not the best defender, and that's exacerbated by the loss of Sakho. He's been left completely exposed for 2 seasons now. When on form with protection around him he's easily Top 6 material as an attacking left back, possibly even Top 4.

You've lost me

He's a defender, that can't defend and as that defender, he's possibly top 4 if you put protection all around him?

This is the same PVA that has spent the last 6 seasons at Sunderland and Palace, a current weak link in our defence, not doing much going forward, but could have been signed by a top 6 side, 12 times over that duration?

Yeah, I'm not convinced.

Think PVA is a pretty similar level to Marcos Alonso. Not as awful defensively, but significantly worse going forward.

Yeah, I'm not convinced.
He's similar to Alonso at Chelsea. Great going forward and in possession, not so great at defending.

He's poor in the air, average one-on-one and in the tackle, and yet he has so much ability. It's fine if you are a side with a decent left sided centre back and left sided defensive mid. But if not it leaves the flank exposed. He'd be fine if he was playing high up in the opposition's half and we were Man City, who were supposedly after him recently, playing high tempo possession-based football. But we are not. A full back is not just for defending, plenty of people argue they can be integral to your attack and there are plenty of articles written on the subject.

I like PVA - but the problem is when he's not on form - he's not scoring, or passing well at all. And when you don't have that, and aren't great at defending, then there's not much else left.

Even more so when we're not the most attacking team going.

I would accept his defensive frailties if his performances had been better going forward.

Yes, good finish, but started off the game with a host of misplaced passes.

He scored the last goal to relegate Hull, Stoke & now Huddersfield.

He's a grim reaper of sorts.

Did well going forward today. Much better than our right back offensively. Well done PVA.

Honestly think his overlapping runs are our most dangerous attacking weapon at home. Made our two best chances in the first half, Michy was too slow to take the first and Jeff snatched at his. Took his goal well. Still think he's a key player for us.

But none of those passes were as simple as the crowd seemed to think and none were in particularly dangerous positions. He also created our 2 best chances of the first half.

They have been very good most of the time though. If the attackers finished off the chances he makes you would realise that more. That 2nd half against West Ham a month or so back, he created great chance after great chance. Our other players just somehow missed them all. He was brilliant that day but some people on here were still complaining he hadn't done as well as he should in the lead up to the penalty we conceded. That was probably true but he more than made up for it.
