Surprised nobody has mentioned the penalty at Bournemouth and/or the miss v Newcastle.

It is why he does not play for a top six team and also why, despite the tendency of people on here to think he is wonderful, he is still with us and there have been precious few rumours that he is going anywhere else.

I'm not saying he is rubbish I am just saying I don't think he is the savior a lot of people seem to think.

I am one of the few who was never keen on his signing . The high fee , ridiculous wages and he misses way too many games . As you say ` at least once a match ` , it does seem more than that . I heard the commentator on Saturday saying that he seems half asleep in the early stages of matches . In fact straight after half time he just passed the ball to Tottenham and Guaita ended up palming it round the post .

This whole not playing for a top 6 club debate is nonsense also. Aside from Liverpool all the others have dogshit centre halves. Potentially spurs aside. In fact most of the top 10 have dodgy centre backs. Leicester, Everton, etc

Quality player. A beast of a centre back when he’s fully fit. But given he spends so much time out injured he’s a very expensive luxury sadly.

Funnily enough, I rated Young more than Thorn. Just goes to show with opinions...

Sakho is a fantastic player, even with his one cock up per game, but how I wish we could take his wages and put it into a midfielder or striker who actually performs. We are thankfully stocked up with good CBs and can't say the same anywhere else in the team right now.

Young was better than Thorn. Young could play a bit. Thorn was a clogger.

I also credit him for introducing time wasting into our game in that 89-90 season when he used to stand on the edge of the box passing it back to Martyn endlessly, but it was very effective when we needed points

Sakho has played in the top division in two countries (he's only ever played top flight games in his career) and has Champions League and international matches under his belt too. Not to mention he was made captain of PSG when he was 17.

Yes he's injured a lot and his wages and transfer fee have stretched our budget, but he's a class above and just oozes something that Palace have never had in a centre back.

This is what I think - Big Mamadou looks gawky. He has a unique way of holding that long body of his, and I don't think I've ever seen a player move in quite the manner he does. It looks all wrong. Sometimes it looks like he's trying to work out how to operate his body during the execution of a pass or tackle.

As a fan it all leads to heart in mouth stuff on a regular basis.

BUT - the outcomes are pretty consistently excellent. He does his defensive work very well, despite looking like its all going to fall apart at any second, and his work in turning defence into attack is unsurpassed - easily the best we've ever seen at Selhurst (Champions League standard in this regard).

Stats don't tell you everything, but I think they back me up in this case:

Mamadou Sakho (Premier League) - Appearances - 112, Errors leading to goal - 2 ( = 0.018 per game)
James Tomkins - App - 245, Errors leading to goal - 7 ( = 0.029 per game)
Scott Dann - App - 212, Errors - 5 ( = 0.024 pg)
Martin Kelly - App - 138, Errors - 5 ( = 0.036 pg)
Gary Cahill - App - 352, Errors - 8 ( = 0.023 pg)

And the reason he fell out of favour at Liverpool wasn’t performance related. It was that fat burner debacle, Klopp got the huff with him for that and Mama got the huff back.

Has a lot of very good qualities. Can pick an interception well, isn't afraid to keep the ball on the floor and is strong.

However, he is an accident waiting to happen with too many touches on the ball, is injury prone and looking unfit at the moment and for me, he is terrible in the air for a centre back. He can't head the ball to save his life.

Would rather him than Kelly or Dann at the back though. Just hate to think how much he has cost us (money wise) per game.

When Sakho is fully fit he is our best ever CB. However his injuries and horror moment in every game is why he is not at a top 6 club.

That's the thing - if we stay in the PL the money is less important than if we get relegated.

With Sakho, (and Benteke), we managed to stay in the PL and even though Tekkers is having a bit of a nightmare and Sakho has had a few injuries, we are still here.

The finance is bonkers but there's an element of: "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it".

Incredibly harsh to judge Sakho on his performance at Spurs.

First game back from a bad injury and a disjointed pre-season. And rushed back following Kelly's injury. If Kelly was fit, Sakho would not have started on Saturday. And he was exposed constantly by the feckless PVA.

Will take him a few games to get up to speed, and when he does, he makes the whole team play better.

However in general it is a bit of a luxury to have a player like him at CB and I reckon he'll move on in a year or two.

I agree with your summary.

And he's not our best ever centre back. Ahead of him would certainly be Alan Stephenson and Mel Blyth. Possibly he's our best in the last 45 years.
Add Andy Thorn and Eric Young.
