As poorly as the team played i lay the fault at the management and the tactics as they were so defensive that none of our front 3 got anything to work with at all. I dont recall Luka of McArthur getting past the halfway line during open play, let alone the CBs.

Tomkins was awful for both goals, not sure how he can be rated so high from the couple of ratings so far.

I don’t get to many away games these days, but went yesterday. Fk me we were shite, apart from Kouyate and Guaita. So so negative. Our game plan was just to stop Chelsea.
Can’t see for the life of me what difference Roy thought those substitutions would make.
Pointless and too late.

im struggling to think of too many games where weve actually been the bettet side. maybe everton , norwich and villa games? the rest weve been toilet and nicked a goal. you cant just sit back in this league, the players look bored on the pitch. are we ever going to sign some more players with attacking threat, the front 3 have no serious competition at all!

As good as Leicester and Chelsea are they are not City or Liverpool.

The team was 4 - 1 down to a bunch of embryos just 4 days ago.

Wished we played the whole game as we played when 1 down.

Guaita & Kouyate 6.5
The rest 5

Until the first goal nothing wrong with the performance except it was boring to watch. After the first goal we managed it well, kept them out for another 10 minutes so we didn’t go two down and nearly scored with Tomkins.

Then went for it more and looked reasonable but they nicked the second.

Boring but it was what it was against a very good and absolutely in form side. We WILL lose more than we win against these sides even if we do it right.

Kouyate was magnificent. Motm by a mile

Thought tomkins actually played much better and looked good with Cahill for much of the game under a lot of pressure. He let the gap happen for the first goal though but it was quality none the less.

Ward did well despite pulisic looking brilliant and Andros did well defensively. Ward is a gutting injury and let’s hope he’s back for Burnley onwards and that 8/9 winnable game run that will shape our season.

Zaha wasn’t great. Flashes, thought he got the measure of James in the second half only to stop running at him for some reason and faded again. Stroppy too. To be fair he saw very very little of the ball in attacking areas. Hope he’s ok after that knock at the end.

Luka poor again first half. Better In the second but he’s not himself. I’d like macathy to come in for him in the next game

Everyone else was decent enough at the ugly stuff. We offered little going forward.

Roy was fine. It was what it was and to expect anything else is delusional. Those tactics get us maximum points from top teams. That’s it. Functional

Look at the teams we’ve lost to. Man City, Leicester and Chelsea. They are insanely good sides this season. Added to Liverpool and I think you’ve got our top 4 come the end of the season. No shame in that

After a day to think about it, we set up either to draw or to lose. The team/squad were all about keeping the opposition goals down, nothing about that game was about scoring anything ourselves.
Why don't we just give the points to them without playing the game, at least that way we would not have the slightest hope of anything exciting.

A midfield three of Kuoyate, Luka, McArthur is the epitome of workmanlike. Townsend is a fairly predictable wide player and Zaha is not on his game. We set up to soak up pressure and try to hit teams on the break, sometimes this works well as against West Ham and Arsenal so no real criticism from me as it will work often enough to keep us clear of danger, other than it is just a bit dull at times.

With Meyer seemingly fading from the scene and Camarasa struggling to break through, I'd like to see McCarthy get some more game time as he is a little more creative with a good range.of passing although still disciplined enough to ensure that we don't have to compromise on the favoured game plan too much. I thought he played pretty well at West Ham and was unlucky to immediately lose his place, although clearly he is working his way back after a serious injury disruption.

As others have said the upcoming run of games against 'lesser' teams will be a good test of whether we can adapt to a more open style with a view to setting out to dominate games more, and I'd like to think this will give us an opportunity to rotate the midfielders more.

A few points from the FYP podcast yesterday for those who do not subscribe - it was a good discussion

Deja Vous really . Yesterdays performance was like lots of Palace games , defend well , keep our shape but offer very little offensively

Sitting back hoping our defence survive 90 mins without conceding a goal is unrealistic , a goal was always going to come and then we struggle.

Our midfield is not going to create much and lacks pace . However criticism of RH is unfair because if he thought Meyer / Camarasa would improve us , then he would select them . Neither making the bench suggests they wont be here for long .

Incredibly we are going into January transfer window needing 4 /5 players . 2 full backs , striker , winger ( no cover currently ) creative ball carrying midfielder . Our lack of pace and ability to take ball forward quickly is a huge concern . Still hard to believe how poor our transfer activity has been lately .

Too much being made of the Sakho and Benteke transfers . Other clubs similar to us still seem to spend money within reason . We have our weakest squad offensively since our first season - with Cameron Jerome up front .

Disappointment at the way Zaha used his brother and leaks to press to try to get a move in Summer . He should have just said he feels he has achieved as much as he can at Palace and just wants to test himself at a higher standard , most Palace fans would have still been disappointed would accept his reasons . Sellsey however feels that Zaha had signed a 5 year contract and is on exceptional money so he knew what he was doing when he signed contract .

Looking at our unbalanced squad , would be happy just to stay up this season . Potential injuries to Ward and Zaha will be huge . Despite Zahas lack of form he is the only real threat we have .

What does it take for a player to be dropped . Tomkins has not impressed since his return and was poor for goal yesterday . Is it lack of competition ? Personally I think Kelly is better option with Cahill

The success of RH last season seems to have worked against him. Is SP thinking RH got us to our best position in Premier League so he can still do the same with less resources than last season .

A thought from me . Is sitting back the only way to play top sides ? Watching Sheffield United playing Tottenham yesterday was an eye opener . Most top 6 sides are stronger offensively than defensively . Wilder decided giving Tottenhams better players time on ball was not the thing to do . United kept their shape but gave Tottenham no time to settle . In addition they created loads of chances and looked threatening , so much energy and desire . They were unlucky to lose .

Individually the best players no doubt, but Cahill doesn't look good shifted to the right, IMO

We seem to have two good pairings in Cahill and Kelly, Sackho and Tomkins, but other combinations seem to be less effective.

Tomkins has bene pretty poor since he came back from injury, making a n
a number of poor mistakes, and has a tendency to go to sleep in games, like yesterday

Currently Kelly looks a better option, despite not being quite as good on the ball

Big Club Bias at its worst: Sheff Utd score the same number of goals as Spurs and still lose

Re your other point, a Chelsea supporting friend of mine couldn’t understand why we didn’t put more pressure on their ‘fragile’ defence (his description), but when you look at our line-up, I suppose the answer’s obvious.
