So you are not really qualified to talk about "smokers don't miss smoking in pubs" or whether landlords rue the changes too...

I agree with ban in resturants, shops, hospitals, etc but it has killed the pub trade

No not the same argument at all.

As it happens drinking in public in Glasgow is against the law. So as to cut down on violent crime.

Taxes on alcohol and cheap supermarket booze has done as much as the smoking ban to do that IMO.

Pretty much. Kids will copy any bad habit so let's ban bad habits in public.

Absolutely, I think the drunks are more dangerous than the smokers (I'm not advocating banning them though). The solution is to ban drunken smokers.

So good going to the pub now, we live in enlightened times. There's always outside...unless that gets banned.

Smoking is a bad habit because it is addictive and damaging to health.

Nicotine is more addictive than alcohol. I am unaware of people suffering ill health from passive drinking so IMO there is a distinction to made.

The proposal was plain daft but there should be a sustained and constant campaign against smokers who discard their cigarette ends in public spaces including jailing a few of them.

If you want to smoke then fine but don't litter the streets.

ridicolous comparison.

More lives are lost or wrecked due to alcohol every year than smoking.

How many deaths due to passive smoking - if any - every year? Now compare it to lives lost to drink driving. Pompous fool.

Come on people. If we all stopped smoking and boozing heavily the world would surely be a better place.
It would certainly save the NHS a lot of money.
By preserving one set of civil liberties we often trample on someone elses.
I would compromise by allowing drunkenness and smoking at home but that is hardly ideal either.

Drinking is ingrained in British culture. It's tough going to the pub with friends and not having a beer. I might go to Frank Ribery's non-alcohol bar next time I'm in Paris.

I've no clue about this debate but is this just because it's harder to prove long-term effects of passive smoking? When the alcohol related deaths are pretty obvious. Either way I agree that it's wrong to scrutinise smoking while glorifying alcohol.

Are you actually capable of arguing a point without reverting to abuse?

Not going to carry this on with you, because Little Al probably expressed what a lot of others thought re our arguing.

I think, and I could be wrong, that the by-law as it applies to Glasgow is different to what is used elsewhere, however it may just be an academic argument and the effect elsewhere is the same.

Possibly, I'm not sure. The first place I ever came across it was about 20 years ago in Bournemouth.

Pubs have closed because they were poorly run and often grim. Or weighed down by the heavy hand of property/brewing companies. And every pub is effected by the cheap booze in supermarkets. And the changing culture of how we tend to drink. The smoking ban comes a good way down that list.

Blessed with many great pubs today, and far better beer than in my youth. I miss the 'local', as many of these tend to be town centre places. But then, my home local was the Rising Sun. When home, we would get on a bus right outside it to go into Beckenham. Or get a cab to croydon. So I played my part in it's demise.
