I'm still really pleased with all our summer business. Guaita was a great deal - although the deal was obviously done last Jan. Kouyate always looked a solid signing at a good price, Ayew has been useful and inexpensive by usual the standards for a forward. Meyer has been slightly underwhelming after the hype from some people on here but he still represents good value and is a very useful player to have.

I doubt anyone would have hyped him up if we knew he wouldn’t play a single league match in central midfield. Agree re the rest of our signings though.

Bloody Dougie what does he do??
Yeah I know. Still, not worth having that argument on here.

Not really the place for the Meyer discussion but it was always going to take time, I think. The reason we have this management team is because they are judicious and very good coaches, who make players better and make teams work. I know that's not always very exciting, and people want expensive signings.

It certainly seems to take time to get some players to really fit in to his system/ style. He obviously doesn't like to rush new faces in either.

Despite his fantastic end with us it also took RLC a while to flourish his with us. Injury obviously slowed that progress more but he was still learning the role in November / December time.

Same with Ayew (particularly) and Kouyate.

Not going to have a go at him because of the penalty as he had to make a split second decision and chose unwisely. I'm sure pretty much every keeper has done likewise.

He deserves to keep his place but I am sure that had Hennessey done this another 2 or 3 pages would have been added to his thread.

Seemed very nervy today and not his best game by far. Henn should be back for the cup unless banned for the salute. Hopefully the pair of them are spurring each other on in training.

Was discussing before the game how the defence seemed calmer with him behind, and that he seemed very confident and decisive

His worst game for us today. One good save early on, Br a horrible mistake for the penalty and was less decisive when the ball was crossed in

Still first choice though, hopefully just an off day

Was he nervy from the off, or after the penalty? I was listening on the radio driving home from work and they said Guaita made 3 saves to keep us in the game before the Penalty, so surprised to read people saying he had nothing to do as radio and BBC match report said he made 4 crucial saves.

I didn't think he was nervy from the off although I don't recall any exceptional saves apart from one which was good. He did come and collect a couple of through balls but they were pretty run of the mill saves. I think he was exposed by bad luck as much as anything for the penalty as Antonio was left free around 6 yards out.

Should also be noted that he wasn't the only one making mistakes which led to the penalty. The players around should never have allowed Antonio to be one on one with Guiada, let alone with the ball.

‘Deserves to keep his place’ Like Hennessey is breathing down his neck

Like it or not, he’s first choice by a country mile. He could throw the ball in his own net 10 times in a row & he’d still be undisputed number 1.

No shock the 3 sole members of the Wayne Hennessey fan club are piping up this evening.

Didn’t look too nervy when he got the ball at his feet in the last minute of injury time.

Was decent again today with one exceptional save at 0-0 in the first half. Seen plenty of other good keepers give penalties away in the way he did when forced to gamble from their line.

Glad the keeper situation has been sorted and guiata will be the number one now
But that has to go down as a bad error
The rest of the game he was good but that nearly cost us the match

I think the West Ham finishing meant they were saves he should have made but, yes it was crucial that he did.

It was a big error for the penalty but certainly deserves to keep his place.

Interested to know if anyone else thinks Guaita’s kicking is poor when trying to go long? At times it looks like he cannot even get the ball past the half way line. Admittedly it is better when he plays from the back but would expect pros to have the strength and technique to kick further.

His first error in the league had to come some time. No denying it but I trust him to brush it off. Not a problem otherwise.
