10 things the Xbox 360 does right

I thought it only fair....

10 things the Xbox 360 does right

Microsoft’s console is a triumph, and we can prove it.

As the PS3 gathers momentum, and Wii sales rocket to the heavens, one could be forgiven for thinking that the Xbox 360 is yesterday’s news. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s a powerful machine, it has a large install base, and many excellent games are available – with many more on the way.

It does many things brilliantly, and several of its features beat the competition hands-down. Following on from yesterday’s feature in which we looked at 10 things the PS3 does right, we’re now ready to give the Xbox its due…

1. It was first to market

This is more something the Xbox 360 did right than does right, but it’s still a valid point. By going on sale first, the 360 managed to get a massive head start on the competition.

It also forced its chief rival, the PS3, to follow its lead. Rather than brand-new or console exclusive titles, most of the games available at the launch of the PS3 were ports of Xbox 360 games that had been out for the better part of a year.

In terms of both install base and software range, the PS3 is still struggling to catch up.

2. Superior development tools and support

Making state-of-the-art, multi-million-dollar video games isn’t easy. And when you’re spending tens of thousands of man-hours programming a new game, any advantage, no matter how small, can make a huge difference. Game developers around the world have praised the ease of use of the software development tools provided by Microsoft, and the technical support that comes with it.

Not only that, it’s a straightforward task to port a game from the PC across to the 360. The genre of the game may not always suit the console experience – RTS games in particular have had a chequered history in the living room – but this still translates in to time and cost savings for publishers.

In contrast, it would seem that Sony has learnt nothing from the growing pains of the PS2, and has once again created a machine that demands extra effort from those who would presume to code for it.

3. Efficient internal architecture.

Even though it hit the market a year beforehand, the technical power of the Xbox 360 is on a very, very similar level to the PS3. Which has more grunt? That depends on which developer you ask. Plausible cases can be made either way. What they agree on is that the way all the bits and pieces inside fit together is extremely important, and that on this point the Xbox 360 comes out ahead.

Without getting too technical, the integrated memory and multi-core CPU structure of the 360’s circuitry is much easier to create effective code for than the PS3’s Byzantine innards. The Wii, meanwhile, is little more than a super-charged Gamecube. Not to say it’s a bad machine, but you’ll probably never see the Unreal 3.0 engine running on Nintendo’s box.

For the 360, this new architecture is a definite step forward from the Frankenstein’s monster that was the first Xbox.

4. Xbox LIVE

Xbox LIVE is a dream to use. Its feature set is broad and comprehensive, and offers clear advantages over its primary competition, the PlayStation Network. You can send and receive messages from within games, plus voice and video communication are a snap. It’s easy to navigate, and user-friendly to a T.

When a critical bug or error emerges, patches are distributed swiftly; but aside from that, upgrades are confined to the ‘Spring Update’ and the ‘Fall Update.’ These well-considered upgrades always introduce major improvements, and by sticking to this schedule gamers aren’t faced with a firmware upgrade every time their turn their consoles on.

Which brings us to…

5. Xbox LIVE Arcade

LIVE Arcade has revolutionised the games industry. By allowing simple, inexpensive games to be downloaded directly to the user’s hard drive/memory unit, Microsoft has opened up a world of new possibilities to gamers and developers alike.

For gamers, it means greater freedom of choice. Board games (Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne), arcade action games (Geometry Wars, Mutant Storm), retro games (Asteroids, Frogger), and many more are available for a song. And thanks to demo versions, you can try before you buy.

Many of these games are of exceptional quality. They offer the perfect counterpoint to more in-depth, time-intensive games like Mass Effect or Blue Dragon.

Xbox LIVE Arcade broadens the appeal of gaming, and thus grows the market. That’s good for everyone.

Developers benefit too. With LIVE Arcade, no physical copies of the game are manufactured, which solves so many problems at a stroke. No negotiating with retailers for shelf space, no shipping, distribution, or shrinkage, and no embarrassing mark-downs should the units fail to sell.

Games don’t have to be mass-market million-sellers to get the green light. A LIVE Arcade title designed to appeal to a niche audience could be given a more modest budget, and still come out ahead. On top of that, Microsoft skews the takings so that the developers get the majority of the profits. This encourages larger companies to take risks, and helps smaller developers to survive.

LIVE Arcade has inspired copycat services on PS3 and Wii – imitation is truly the sincerest form of flattery.

6. Backwards Compatibility

New models of the PS3 have dropped this option completely. In contrast, the range of Xbox 1 titles that will run on the 360 continues to increase. Microsoft has even announced the availability of hit Xbox 1 games as paid downloads over Xbox Live Arcade. Now those who missed out on cult hits like Psychonauts on the last console generation have a second chance.

It’s not a feature that everybody wants; that’s why Sony felt it could get away with axing it. But some people feel very strongly about backwards compatibility, and you’ve got to please as many people as possible to secure mass-market success.

7. The controller

This is integral to the experience – every second you’re playing on a console, you’ve got a controller (of one kind or another) in your hands. It’s just as well, then, that Microsoft got the Xbox 360 controller right first time.

Rumble comes standard, for starters. Unlike a certain other console manufacturer that initially claimed that it was technically impossible to include it, Microsoft had this now-expected feature on board from day one.

Both wireless and wired USB controllers are available, giving gamers freedom of choice. Some people don’t want cords getting the way, and others don’t want to have to worry about batteries running out. Microsoft has ensured that both camps can get what they want.

Gimmicky motion-sensing control is not included. When choosing whether to do something badly or not at all, the latter is sometimes the smarter option.

8. It’s a true media hub

We live in the iPod age. People now consider media a very personal thing, and expect to be able to customise their audio/visual experience as they would their wardrobe, living room, or Honda Civic.

Custom track lists have been supported since the original Xbox, and have gone a long way towards letting gamers mould their hobby as they see fit. Granted, a game soundtrack can be a defining part of the shared experience (one guy in the office firmly believes that all games with any kind of caves or tunnels should play the underground theme from Super Mario Bros.).

But it’s proper and just that gamers should be able to choose. Besides, they’re paying enough for the privilege.

If you’ve got a PC running Vista, streaming all your movie files to the TV is just as convenient. The Xbox 360 is transforming the way we enjoy our media.

And while we’re on the subject…

8a. CD and DVD playback come standard

When people saw the teeny tiny discs of the Gamecube for the first time, they were shocked. ‘Great,’ they thought, ‘now I need to make room in front of the telly for both my console AND my DVD player.’ News that the Wii would have standard 12cm discs caused a wave of relief – which came crashing down when it was sheepishly announced that the Wii wouldn’t support DVDs either.

Or CDs.

Sure, we love going to Ikea as much as the next person. Get in early enough, and you can get a full hot breakfast for $2 (50c extra for baked beans). But every extra piece of single-use home entertainment gear means more space, more shelves, and more of that bloody little Allen Key. Oh, and more time and money up in smoke.

CDs play fine in the 360, and on the Elite version DVDs upscale a treat. Whatever Microsoft paid to ensure those features were in every 360 console was definitely worth it. For HD-DVD playback, an optional little add-on drive is also available – those who don’t want the capability are under no obligation to pay for it.

9. Getting the Japanese developers on board

There were precious few Japanese-developed games for the original Xbox, but that trend is turning around. More and more exclusive titles (Blue Dragon, Dead Rising, etc) and timed exclusive titles (Lost Planet et al) are coming to 360. And that’s just the blockbusters – quirkier titles from the land of the rising sun (like Exit and Every Extend Extra) are making themselves at home on the definitive Gaijin console.

This represents a significant cultural shift. Japanese developers aren’t fools – they know the 360 will never have a major presence in their homeland. But they are well aware of the profitability of making games for export. Both Dead Rising and Lost Planet sold well over a million copies each on 360, mostly off the back of western markets.

As for ports, the easy-to-use development tools ensure that there is minimal added expense when making a game for 360 as well as PS3. Microsoft’s console is also proving fertile ground for rough-and-ready budget titles like Earth Defence Force 2017.

Slowly, but surely, Xbox is winning over Japan. Considering how insular their culture is, this is an incredible achievement.

10. Halo

Last, but certainly not least, is The Halo Factor. For multi-player action, online, or under the one roof, nothing comes close. There are games out there that are arguably better, classier, more inventive, and better looking. But they don’t have the same universal appeal. By and large, mates don’t get together for a TimeSplitters Night, or a Quake Night, or even an Unreal Tournament Night. But the lads will gather for a Halo Night, bringing enough flat-screens and consoles to fill a house.

Halo is now so ubiquitous that some American churches are having Halo LANs to encourage attendance.

While Microsoft no longer owns Bungie, the software juggernaut maintains close ties with the developer of Halo, and together they manage the brand extremely carefully. When a game novelisation hits #3 on the New York Times Bestseller List, there’s no denying it – this is a cultural phenomenon.

So, those are the 10 most important things that the Xbox 360 does right. Don’t write off that towering, inhaling brick just yet!

We’re not blind to the 360’s faults, of course. For further reading, you can check out our feature where we give 10 reasons why the next Xbox will launch in 2009.

Be sure to come back next week, when we look at 10 things the PS3 does wrong. We’ll also be going over the Xbox 360’s greatest mistakes…

Oh, and don’t forget to discuss this article in our forums.

The Controller, Halo, Backwards compatability, Media Hub and CD/DVD playback arguments are a bit weak.

Efficient internal architecture? that millions cant experince as their 360 has broken down at least once.

XBOX live and Development tools are the best arguments for me. Microsoft surely has an advantage as alot of games developers use PC's and probably Windows. Making Developments kits probably seemed like second nature to Microsoft and is probably the reason why alot of the developers seem to prefer developing for it.

Live seems great but PS3 online is still very enjoyable with the right games and regular updates are constantly improving the service. And its free

part of the charm surely I mean, I'd never have a Japanese car, even though I know it's not going to break down. Once in 18months for me, is hardly the end of the world and with a 3 year warranty, it's irrelevant.

How comes the Halo games get slagged off by all and sundry, bleh Halo 2 was a waste of time, full of lame 12 year old americans on live, Halo 3 is disappointingly average and overhyped etc etc, until it's time to be an Xbox fanboy, when it suddenly becomes the best and most important game ever...?
