All I can say is that when I used to buy PC's I would have to replace every couple of years primarily because the machines were cluttered with malware to the point of barely functioning. Now, I live with a wife and a son who back then would click first then complain when something didn't work, so it wasn't surprising that the pc's used to get so ****ed up so quickly despite running 3rd Party anti-virus/malware software.
Since switching to Mac, we have an iMac and 2 MacBook Pro's. The iMac is over 5 years old now the Macbooks about 3 years. All have had additional RAM but other than that I have done nothing to them except keep them updated with the most recent OSX upgrades. All 3 run as good as ever, no browsing sessions are disrupted with malware etc, the speed of all 3 machines has not noticeably slowed over the years and unlike my PC experiences, don't have ANY 3rd Party anti-virus software running.
My wife and son may have changed their habit of click click click but the reality is that we have had an absolutely trouble free computer experience since ditching PC's and Microsoft.
