Best Free email provider

So I need a new email provider. What do people recommend?
As a user I like lots of storage to keep useful old stuff in categories.

talktalk: Been using for years and like the layout, but in the past they deleted me without warning and I lost lots of stuff. Got compensation but I can't afford for it to happen again.

Gmail: switched to this and I like the link to calendar but it doesn't seem designed with the hoarder in mind - no ability to create sub-folders is a problem.

What others are out there that get thumbs up? Outlook? Microsoft? Yahoo?

You can create sub folders in Gmail. They're called labels.

Having used Outlook, Yahoo and Gmail I'd recommend Gmail. More than enough storage space and all the features you'll need from a free provider.

I rarely delete emails - I organise them with 'labels' and archive them.

Yes but they also stay in your in-box, meaning your in-box gets bigger and bigger

No, you are meant to archive if you want them out of your in-box and just sitting labeled only

You can set up rules so they are auto archived as well so you never/rarely get much arriving/sitting in your actual in-box. I personally prefer them to arrive labeled automatically and then archive them manually, you can configure it how you like of course.

Just give in to it. It doesn't really matter.
Search in Gmail is so good I don't bother archiving, labelling anything.

OK I am starting to be convinced. Thanks all for advice
With gmail you can presumably label and search in archives as well?

One thing that bugs me about gmail is that it doesn't seem to want to import my 'sent' items from old provider (talktalk). I have some important stuff I need a record of.
I suppose what I could do is move talktalk sent items to talktalk inbox and then import to gmail inbox and the create a label 'sent' to archive them. Does that sound doable?

Gmail's a bitch if you want to access your account at a dodgy internet cafe. Basically, when you try to log in, you can only open the account (which it does automatically) of the first person that ever accessed it there.

No worries. In answer to your question, the best way to think of it, is that the labels are your archive. If you have mails in your inbox that are labeled as required, when you select and archive them they leave your inbox to sit in the labeled "folder" - when you next search for the that email it will appear labeled with your label but not in your inbox. There is a lot more functionality to this, but on the basic level just think of your labels as folders, and to move emails from your inbox you "archive" them to the labeled folder.

I can label (stays in inbox and shows up under label/folder) OR move (removed from inbox) which is what I normally do.

I have a company gmail account though - don't know of that's different.

And you can 'nest' a label under another label, which is your sub-folder.

Nope, same deal although some of the features may be locked down by your employer. I can't enable two-factor authentication on my work account...
