Benteke is important given the way we are set up to play at the moment. And the tactics seem to be the same without him, despite his absence. Him being central, rather than Ayew drifting around a bit, keeps the central defenders broadly in position, and makes it harder for the opposition to double / triple team Wilf.

Schlupp playing as part of a midfield 3 is also a benefit - his power and pace mean that he can push the opposition back on the far side, and again give them something else to think about aside from Wilf. Townsend looks a bit lost at the moment IMO, so both Schlupp and Benteke would improve the balance of the side somewhat at present

Danny Murphy and Brede Hangerland have talked about it, it is not something new, it is Roy's way and has been for decades. If you look at the oldest squads in 2007-2010 you see Roys name quite a lot in the oldest teams - in that first year they relegation on GD. Ironically he had a marginally younger team generally the following year when Fulham got into Europe, but reverted to older players the year after that.

If you want to see younger players, you need to change the manager.
Spot on, next season will be much of the same. Canít see us signing many players in the transfer window. We will get the injured players back and roll out the same 11 next season.

After reflection that was an abysmal performance on our part. Benteke or not we had enough out there to at least trouble them last night. They fully deserved their result. Thought McNeil was very good for them.í

On our part we were devoid of ideas and so slow with the ball. Luka was extremely poor and I feel he contributes to us being slow. Before lockdown our midfield whilst not dynamic was forcing the issue. Iím gonna put this out there but I so much prefer McCarthy in the holding role with Mcarthur and Kouyate - those three make a better trio for what we have.

I do have another problem about last night and I really donít understand why we didnít bring on Pierrick. Also we could have given Mitchell a cameo and pushed PVA (who was guilty of losing the ball on so many occasions). We are also short of strikers so why not at least have JK on the bench, heís a big lad and loves a scrap apparently, perfect against Burnley. Surely now is the time to give these lads some game time, weíre safe so letís mix it up a little.

I thought we were awful, truly dreadful.

It typified so much of our play this season - huff and puff and out of ideas when we reach the opponents penalty area.

Wilf was marked out of the game by a couple of nobody's. Andros was again very poor and the keeper seems to be spending too much time training with Hennessy.

Midfield again lacked any ounce of creativity - so much so even Myer looked OK when he came on.

A little harsh on Meyer & Guaita but otherwise, spot on.

It seems like we cross the ball more when Benteke isn't playing. Does anyone have any stats to back up/disprove this theory?

When you then factor in no Benteke, who if nothing else enables us to go long and also moves Ayew out wide where he has been good from, we get even worse. Townsend isn't the answer anymore and the squad has glaring holes like not 1 recognised forward on the bench.

We miss Schlupp and we miss Benteke. Could also throw in Tosun and Wickham add to this team/squad and we would get a lot better.

I would like to see Jairo get a run of games now however. He has the quality to improve far beyond the 4 who are apparently above him in the pecking order centrally, but not sure for what reason. Haven't seen much from Meyer to think he could cut it in the prem though Burnley at home against a team of defenders was the chance to play him, not LM vs Liverpool
Hodgson dropped Jairo after a MoM performance before the lockdown so i dont hold much hope for him. Big shame and one of the reasons i want Hodgson replaced.

A draw would have been a fair result we looked like a team on the beach, after they scored we upped our game but never to a good enough level. Wilf should not have started JR and Meyer needed games so poor team selection from RH.
