Villa? When they went down they had bought a load of random players in their early 20s from France mostly. Jordan Ayew being one of them.

Fair point re Sunderland and Bolton though.

It is but total cost is less than £8m over two years - a bargain in today's market.

Shit signing. Good job we have a red hot scouting system.

If we sign Welbeck I’m giving up on this season. I’ll be back when we Are relegated.

I would have liked Konsa, but as we know from Riedeweld it's a huge risk throwing a young centre back into the PL. We need someone for now and this fits the bill. Clearly a solid character and has had very few injuries in his career. Hasn't been unavailable for a game since 15/16. Welcome Gary. Four million per year wages is nothing if it keeps us up.

We really have got above ourselves when a well capped centre back of this pedigree, at a cost of 8 million over two years, is considered not good enough as cover and competition.

People have very short memories when we struggled to sign anyone of note and now we have players of Cahill's calibre wanting to be here.

I honestly think that if we got Messi on a free, some on here would be moaning.

Tell me about it. The palace fanbase is turning into that which we despised when we were promoted. Spoiled, arrogant, above our station, etc...

Sounds like a sensible move with our 1st choice centre back pairing struggling with injuries.

Means that Kelly could cover the right back position if we get short though. Hopefully we do actually buy a Right Back in this window!

Not really one for the future but not a massive financial risk on a 2 year deal.

This for me.

I would also like us to sign a young RB & ease into the squad a young LB, as well as another midfielder & a blo*dy striker!!!!!

I expect I will be disappointed again.

Damo was 36 when he left us and did a decent enough job until the last season which was maybe a bridge too far. I guess the hope is that Cahill can be a classier version of Mr Delaney who served us well. Cahill has the character and the determination to be that. People seem to dislike him because his career achievements exceed his natural ability. But that just shows that apart from anything else this guy is exactly the sort of bloke you want in your team. He's a winner. He's captained the national team ffs.

Some utter ***** on here.

I'd accept the 'we need young prospects' point if any fans gave young players an actual chance before writing them off as '******* useless'; 'waste of money'; 'we got our pants pulled down' etc. Even moreso now a 'prospect' costs about £20m.

Unless players do an AWB (the exception, not the norm) they are not given the chance.

The lad BHA got for £20m, Maguire for £80m or Cahill for free. I think we can see who got the best deal.

Very good point.

We won't be playing a high line (any team that does will get punished through VAR imho because linos will keep their flags down resulting in more goals). Therefore Cahill suits us more than Chelsea and - this will be a controversial opinion - he is arguably better than Tomkins.

He doesn't set the juices flowing, it's not an exciting signing, we desperately need further signings of pace in the final third, we need more youth for the ageing squad, I could go on and on and on, BUT he is a rock solid signing for a club like us and we are extremely lucky to have Hodgson at the helm to attract these players. More of the same please.

I imagine he got at least a few million signing on fee.

Agree. How many England ex-captains have we ever had in our squad? A leader even if off the bench.

He looks in fine fettle in our spandex. Players like Cahill and Milner can expect to play into their mid to late 30s if they avoid bad injuries. An upgrade on Damo, Brede and Dann. On reflection I'm happy with this, especially in light of Tomkins niggles and Mama's fragility.

I've not read all the thread but it is interesting to see a fair amount of negativity. In the various whatsapp groups I am in everyone (non Palace) thinks we have done very well getting Cahill.

Personally I think it is a good signing. We can't wait for Tomkins to come back and then hopefully sell/loan Dann in January. Cahill signing does seem to indicate the Roy doesn't view Kouyate as a CB

Would rather Kelly at CB over Cahill. Cahill was a decent player 6 years ago.
Ex England captain ? Ffs lol.
Handful of games in the last year. No pre season & too slow.

I wouldn’t want too see him anywhere near our first 11.
At this stage of his career I don’t see him being a better option than who we have.
Dress it up how you will. He’s shite.
