The more I've thought about this signing the more its grown on me. If we can get in CB cover cheap we can spend in more important areas. He's basically going to cover Tomkins and I'd say he could even be slightly better. Only problem is it's another player over 30 which isn't great for the future.

I usually like watching these interviews despite the usual platitudes about why they are joining; but with one, I couldn’t listen to his given main reasons, as you know his actual main reasons were staying in London and a massive wage. That said, he’s a good player and professional and I think he’ll be an excellent addition. But please don’t tell me your second reason for coming here is because Selhurst Park is a good and exciting place.

Whilst it is a very good signing given we would appear forced into it we shouldn't conflate it with the fact that it is a big blow to the club that we had to do it. One less top player for the business positions that we need.

Some on here who keep knocking the signing (assuming it gets over the line) need to understand IF we had our 1st choice CB's able to remain fit fine, as unfortunately Both are an injury waiting just around the corner, otherwise we would NOT have signed him.
We need a quality experienced premiership defender as cover that can "hold" the defence together and he can do that, the fact is a younger Cahill would have been way out of our reach is the reality, Ideally if we can also afford to bring in a younger CB aswell would be good planning hence why i feel Calum Chambers would be a good signing, as he offers cover at RB aswell.
The alternative is to switch Kouyate into central defence a role which may suit him better now as he could play the ball playing Sakho role well.

So the blokes played circa 40 games a season for the last 5/6 years winning titles and cups other than last year where he played only 8 (not two!) and yet most believe hes been past it for years.

I honestly wonder whether a lot of people have ever watched a game of football in their lives.

It baffles me, the only reason he wasnt playing was Sarri and his tactical view of what a CB should play like. Up until this year he was a first name on the team sheet player. With MS and JT having injury periods and Dann not as quick as he was post his last injury, this is a perfect signing while we assess the potential of players like Tavares.

I have never thought of Kelly as a good starting 11 player but I have always thought he really stepped up when he was drafted in as cover and played alongside Tompkins or Sakho. Having seen a far lesser version of Kelly, when he has played alongside Dann, I realise that Kelly needs a strong player alongside him.
In recent seasons if either Tompins or Sakho were injured we always got away with it. If both Tompkins & Sakho are injured, Kelly playing alongside Dann, Inniss, Wood or Reidevald simply will not be sufficient. (I know Kouyate can theoretically play CB but Roy does not seem keen on that).

Therefore to bring in Cahill on a 2 yr contract looks an excellent move. I am hoping that over the next 2 seasons Wood can step up to become 4th choice but he too will need quality around him to school him.

Im ******* delighted with him this morning

Tomkins and possibly Sakho missing is devastating. Cahill and Sakho for the second game would make me feel much better at the back

Yes, Gary Cahill is just like Wes Brown. But which centre backs did Bolton and Villa sign from title-chasing clubs?

could be a decent signing provided he still has this level of football in his legs at his age.

Clearly we have gone for him after Tomkins suffered a set back. With Sakho not yet fit, Dann having had injuries and only Kelly as another fit CB it makes sense.

If he ends up playing lots then we keep him for another year. If not he goes at the end of the season with our thanks.

Huth and Morgan had both broken 30 when they won the title.

Anyone watched his interview yet?

One of the reasons he was excited to come here was the "talented young squad"

Boy is he in for a shock...
