At the end of the day I do not see what we have got to lose getting him in on a year long loan.

If he plays well then fantastic AJ could thrive but if his attitiude and performances are lacking then he is still a good player to bring on from the bench and something completely different to other options we have got already, if he was rubbish Aresenal would have got rid.

There have been alot of players we have had on loans at palace and surely it is a calculated gamble rather than spending £2.5m on someone and finding out after a year and half we have wasted our money.

He is a cocky •••••• who could effect the team spirit. There is no point bringing him on loan to sit on the bench thus wasting cash.

And there is no way we will be spending £2.5M on a single player this summer.

I don't know about his attitude, but he would be a very good signing for us in terms of his playing ability.

Showed glimpses of what he could do whilst at Norwich, but not really convincing. Not sure about this one.

Your absolutely right Basingstoke. If there was a prob with Bentlys attitude we would'nt even be reading in the papers that we're interested in him as ID would in 1 quick phonecall to NW know whether to bother enquiring with Arsenal

They did, see this article from June...

Norwich manager Nigel Worthington has admitted he is keen to bring back David Bentley on loan.

The Arsenal youngster spent last season on loan at Carrow Road as Worthington's side slipped to an agonising last-day relegation.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a firm advocate of loaning out his young talent to assess their potential, and it still remains to be seen whether Bentley will figure in his plans after the emergence of Robin van Persie.

The 20-year-old started brightly with The Canaries although his progression was dented as he missed ten weeks of the season after damaging knee ligaments in January.

After tasting regular football Bentley has been vocal in his desire to play a much greater role than he has previously enjoyed at Highbury next season.

However, Worthington has now revealed he is again keen to secure the services of the talented young Englishman for another year.

The Norwich boss admitted to being unsure about Wenger's plans for the talented youngster, who burst onto the scene at the North London side with a superb goal against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in 2004.

"If there was an opportunity to bring him back here for another year then I'd love to do it," said Worthington.

"I don't know what Arsenal want to do - whether they'd want him to be playing in the Premiership or, indeed, if they want him to go out on loan for another year."

RE: ATTITUDE

Bentley back in favour after prank

10 November 2004 16:42

Nigel Worthington is ready to welcome back David Bentley to the first team fold this weekend after falling out with the youngster over a training ground prank that badly misfired.

The on-loan Arsenal frontman has been left out in the cold since he decided to let his manager 'ave it' during a session at Colney - and booted the ball away as hard as he could.

The confrontation came when Bentley refused to participate in a routine where two players stand in the middle of a circle of team-mates, trying to cut out passes. The manager had to order him to take part, and was distinctly unimpressed when the England under-21 international did an impression of comedian Peter Kay in the popular John Smith beer advert.

Worthington refused to accept Bentley's apology at the time, and punished the player by leaving him out of the Norwich squad for the recent games against Manchester City and Blackburn. But he now feels the 20-year-old has learned his lesson and confirmed today that he would in the frame for Saturday's crucial clash with Charlton at the Valley.

“We've got good discipline at this club and we've got great pride in it,” said the City boss. “A new player coming to the club like David has got to get to grips with it. He has done that and now we move on, it's as simple as that.

“It's a little lesson for him to learn and now he's back in the frame for Saturday. He is in contention for a place in the squad. Since this happened he has been much better and looks like the player we brought in on loan.”

Bentley made an encouraging start to his spell at Norwich after joining the club on a season-long loan during the summer. Having made just five full appearances for the Gunners he was sent to Carrow Road to gain first team experience – and was a regular in the side during the early weeks of the campaign.

He started five of the Canaries' opening six games, only missing the home defeat against Arsenal - for which he was ineligible - and opened his goal account in the excellent 2-2 draw at Newcastle. But as the season wore on his form became somewhat patchy and he was dropped to the bench for a couple of games before returning to the fold in the 2-2 home draw at Portsmouth last month, when he produced his best performance in a City shirt so far.

But he was substituted after a hour in the next match – a 0-0 draw at West Brom on October 16 – and has only played seven minutes of football for the first team since, as a late substitute in the home defeat at the hands of Everton a week later.

As Bentley is still an Arsenal player Worthington liased with the coaching staff at Highbury before punishing the player for his misdemeanour – and dropped him from the team after receiving the full backing of Arsene Wenger and his colleagues.

“I've spoken to Arsenal about the situation and they are well aware of the position,” said the City manager. “They are very happy with the way the situation has been dealt with.”

Having moved to Norfolk for first team football it's somewhat ironic that Bentley would almost certainly have made a couple of appearances for Arsenal in recent weeks had he decided to stay put. Wenger fielded a team of youngsters in the Carling Cup victories against Manchester City an Everton and has promised to keep faith with his second, or in some cases, third choice players for the remainder of the competition.

A spokesman at Highbury said the club were happy to leave the matter in Worthington's hands and had no further comment to make.

RE: PERFORMANCES

Boss gives hint on Bentley

19 May 2005 11:33

Bentley has recovered from a mid-season knee injury to play in each of City's previous six games, with the club's revival coinciding with his reappearance. When he came on as a half-time substitute against Manchester United on April 9 the Canaries were drawing 0-0, having just lost five matches on the trot to slip seven points off the pace at the foot of the table.

They ended up beating the Premiership giants

2-0, with Bentley providing the cross for Dean Ashton's opening goal - and have picked up 10 points from a possible 15 since then to move out of the bottom three.

The 20-year-old Gunner has been a solid performer in all those fixtures, and also found the net in the 4-3 defeat at Southampton to take his goal record to two in 27 appearances, 22 of which have been starts.

What are people's objections to this highly promising young Arsenal mid-
fielder, still only 20, who played 28 (5) Premier League games for Norwich, spending a total of 2,057 minutes on the pitch and scoring
two goals? He has also played several under 20 and 21 games for
England, and didn't he score a special goal for Arsenal in the FA Cup?
We are told by some he is "cocky", but wasn't that a similar adjective
used to describe Ian Wright and Johnny Byrne and even Paul Gascoigne?
Oh dear! Can't have players exuding confidence playing for Palace,
can we?!
Doesn't score enough goals for a midfielder? Watson scored 0 in 21
Soares 0 in 22 and Hughes 2 in 36 League games last season......

Yeah, I know (I was waiting for that ).
Interesting to see that all the players released by the Arse that year have done very little (only Gray and Sidwell have even got close to progressing). As for the starlet Paulo Vernazza - wasn't he released by Watford ?

He may not have been great last season, but the ccc (or 2nd division as it should be known) is miles away fron the premier. he would be an asset for a season - possibly play behind the front 2 in a 352 (which Mcdonald suggested)??

Balti Man is playing for a contract
Do feel he would be able to develop a bit more as a player in a regular position in the CCC. Has got potential and if he can help with our promotion push then get him on board...
