This.
We need CB cover until Scott Dann is back. Makes sense to bring in a midfielder who provides this cover as well as providing midfield options.
Similar argument could made finding a 'wide' midfielder who can play striker (eg. a Wellbeck type).

I took that as Mayer or Gonalons in that order + kouyate. + 2 more including a loan.

That would be great however the main thing I’ve taken from it is we are talking to them and are out to get players. As Steve said the right players, not just players.

I didn’t really think Mayer would be on our radar but I guess arsenal, Liverpool etc are seeing him as a squad player and one for the future so won’t pay. We see him as replacing Cabaye so probably will... maybe. He’d be my target number one by some distance of the players we’ve been linked to

Absolutely.
Always said,with the 25 Man Squad Ruling,having Versatile Players,who can Play in 2 or 3 Positions,is Essential.

Some say last year was his best year. Came through as a Number 10 but whilst looking good he never excelled and competition in that area earned he didn't get much international recognition.

Last year he dropped back further into the midfield and was the key player in winning the ball and getting his team moving forward - the similar role to the one Cabaye played for us. His goals and assists reduced but that was more down to the change in role then his form per se. (As they dropped off his tackles and interceptions increased dramatically as an example)

Mayer, wily, Antonio and Abrahams would make a very good transfer window.

But it is so wrong.

Of our 25 man squad we only used 24 players over 21 last season, 4 of those played twice or less and mostly from the bench.

Depending on teh age of a couple (as both TFM and RLC) were U21 last season when on loan, we don't need a full 25.

I couldn’t imagine us getting this guy unless it was last day of the window. I’d imagine he will be keeping his options open with the big clubs until the last minute.

The age thing is a red herring. The club needs around 25 players that have the ability to do a role in the Premier League. It's the quality that matters not the age.

No squad of 25 will ever be truly equal in ability and so some will play infrequently but the point is that we need them still. The better the quality of those outside the top 11 the more we will take advantage of that to rotate during and between matches because players get knocks and jaded. Over the past few seasons the lack of additional quality players available has made rotation very difficult if not possible.

It depends if it's about playing regularly or earning mega money . His agent prefers the big money route .

Having no knowledge of the player other than reading the posts above this sounds like the top young European player that we get excited about every year and then instead we sign an unknown or an older player in the wane or worst still no one. I.e. He fits the annual one that got away nicely alongside Schurrle I guess. All part of the transfer window experience.
