CATFORD

Thinking of visiting this year, fancy doing the Concert Hall and looking at the ancient bridge by the station and the ruins of the dog track, heard it could be a bit dodgy. Any tips for my visit?

Went to the Broadway theatre a few weeks back and was okay and there's two stations to choose from! Made it back in one piece.

A true melting pot. The meeting of 5 continents. In one direction Downham and out towards the green fields of Bromley. In the opposite direction the soaring skyscrapers of Lewisham and the financial metropolis. While the East-West axis hints of an Elysian past as the great South Circular whisks the traveller from Forest Hill to Lee Green. And yet Catford is not without its own attractions. The old dole office and next door the site of one of the great Woolworths of South London. The dogs, the athletics track and ... some bus stops. And two stations!

Good pubs. Catford Constitutional Club, Catford Bridge Tavern, Ninth Life. Catford Mews cinema has a bar and various food outlets. Well worth a visit.

Keep going along the South Circular towards Forest Hill and you'll come to the Blythe Hill Tavern, one of the best pubs in South London.

Ninth life, christ, I thought it was a hideous dive

As for the horrific way they ruined the frontage of the once classic Black Horse

You can't buy a ticket between Catford and Catford Bridge stations.

Just make sure you don't appear as being a well off tourist "sightseeing" if you want to avoid the possibility of being mugged.

I’m puzzled by the name. Did cats cross the river here? Or help others to do so?

Henry Ford invented the passenger seat for his favourite cat, which makes sense really.

The Catford Bottle Shop is worth a visit. Some excellent beers in there. My favourite being Augustiner Helles Lager.

Each to their own I suppose. The Black Horse was quite a sad place by the time it closed, but Ninth Life is usually pretty lively and they do some great Jamaican food now too.

Safe to say really that in terms of the quality of pubs that Catford, Lewisham, Grove Park and the Downham area are not quite as good as Blackheath or Greenwich.
