They've changed their tune then. When Ivan Rogers was appointed the Eurosceptics were at minimum content because the pro-EU bunch were concerned given his reputation for being cool on Europe, being ex-Treasury and all (who are notoriously hard line and constantly trying to dampen too much pro-EU fervour across Whitehall, which is why they wrested supremacy on EU policy from the FCO).

Nice one Another obstacle out the way.
Obstacle to what? I'm looking forward to what you have to say when the negotiations don't go your way, especially now you will have your own man on the team.

Laughable.

The fallout from the resignation has been hilarious. The BBC article is openly taking the piss out of No.10.

Another way to respond to this blatant echo of Farage, is to use a quote from another former Government negotiator who had numerous triumphs against the Commission:

"What do they want? An ethnic cleansing of diplomats? It makes everyone rather incredulous [here in Brussels] if the only way to be considered a team player for the UK is to be blindly oblivious to how Europe works."

it's almost as if they (No.10) don't understand what a professional is or what the word means

This is another demonstration as to how May is running her government.

Both sides are still fighting the referendum all over again, when what we need is experience, a cool head and someone who understands how the EU works to get the best possible outcome for our country. That person has just resigned, and now it seems we are just going to get another blinkered Brexiter, just because he or she is a Brexiter, to take his place, who hasn't got a clue.

Yep. It seems they would rather have inept, myopic ignorant people with their head in the clouds to decide their future for them now. What could possibly go right?

But I felt that leaving would require a (minimum) 10 year project. We first needed to fix our economic model (our shocking current account imbalance (trade) & productivity gap, as well as poor income distribution) and also to enjoy better global conditions (whereas now post-crisis global growth is rocky and global trade is on the verge of going backwards).
Also - did you think that some other country would **** things up first ?

Who really cares if some state bruiser gets the old heave-ho/flounces off. Not exactly the main point in all this.

You should.

.....and the main point is to get the best people in to do the deals for the benefit of all. You don't need to be an expert to understand that basic piece of knowledge.

the point is to get the best deal possible. Our government appear to have harmed that. Now they may be able to recover the position through a sensible appointment of a replacement but.........

In a worldwide exclusive, the SKWAWKBOX can report that not only did Nigel Farage apply for a German passport, but he did so on the day after the EU referendum – and is under police investigation for allegedly providing false information.

Mr Farage was reported to the police by a concerned German citizen with an interest in British politics, who knew of the application and believed it could not have been made legitimately.

German law normally requires 8 years residency – with only minimal absences – in order to qualify for a passport. For those with a German spouse – Mr Farage’s wife is German – the length of residency is reduced to 3 years’ continual residency. Mr Farage has not, according to the complainant, come anywhere near meeting those requirements but, on the application form, used the Hamburg address of a relative of his wife to claim residency.

The fact of the application and of the subsequent allegation and police investigation can be found in these confirmations from Hamburg police to the complainant – the first being the initial confirmation of receipt and case number and the second a response to a request for an update:

Isn't the job of the Civil Service to implement the policy and laws set out by Government? Ivan's own words clearly demonstrate his contempt for the policy. His expertise is irrelevant if he actively works against Government policy or encourages others to do so. He absolutely needed to go.
