I see the French have cancelled high level talks about the migrant situation.

Not like the French to be pedantic, belligerent and childish. Shocked to hear it.

Petty xenophobia is one of the major causes and symptoms of this tragedy.

As exemplified above.

Itís simply not necessary Ö unless weíre talking about the Australian cricket team.

Huge generalisations youíre making there.

Truth is neither the U.K. nor French governments give a shit about migrants and both use them as scapegoats.

Not sure whatís worse in terms of the callous way the French leave asylum seekers to live in camps and demolish them from time to time or the U.K. keeping them in prisons where there is suicide, rape and assaults.

Do you think Johnson and co will ever learn that the point about diplomacy is to be, well, diplomatic - and not to slag off other countries publicly the whole time.

Its kind of funny, in a very creepy way, that they can't be called prisons, legally, as that falls under very specific definitions of law. They're detention centres because you can't just send someone to prison, without due process and very specific legal rights.

Yep, they'd be much better off if they were sent to prison - where they'd have specific legal rights.

I donít disagree but if it had been the UK govt who had pulled out of the talks, you and certain others on here, would be going apoplectic.

Children are dying ..... something needs to be done by governments for these people and to stop the need to cross this dangerous channel.

Most of the people here are U.K. citizens, not French citizens. Ergo we have more interest in the actions of our government rather than the French. Yes Macron has an election and Macron has form for using British bashing in his election strategy, and it is perfectly possible that the decision to pull out linked to that. But our elected PM sent a letter to Macron with some unnecessary dickish comments that allowed Macron to make that decision. It’s our elected PM who I am more angry at because I’m a British citizen and he’s supposed to do stuff in the best interests of the U.K. and he hasn’t.

Perhaps but I think our demands were quite ridiculous.

1: Our police to patrol France's border is insulting to a nation the size of France
2: All asylum seekers to be returned straight to France is basically saying the UK will no longer take asylum seekers from France and they are now all permanently France's problem.
3: Sharing of data - we have just left the eu. Have we forgotten we have just left the EU?

Entering a negotiation with not just unreasonable demands but frankly insulting demands; is a terrible way to start a negotiation.
