Wasn't there a threat of 'legals' over that?

£15K fine for disrepute for Punch from the FA.

Nothing from Warnock. Let's be honest, it isn't his style and it might not be a court case that he would want to go through with

Yeah, I was thinking of what it was like to watch. I remember a patch of four or five weeks of really shocking performances.

You're not wrong there, turgid football outside of individual brilliance from Bolasie. Seemed to take until Pardew came in for Punch and Wilf to really join the show.

Neil Warnock - Middlesbrough manager

Really like the man and liked him as our manager on the whole. His passion, drive and zest for the game is infectious. He’s the manager you hate if you’re against him but love him if he’s on your side. One of a kind. I absolutely wish him all the best and the game is better off for him in it than not.

Perfect appointment for Boro, will undoubtably keep them up.

He is perhaps the greatest lower league manager of the modern era - is it 9 separate promotions?

Conversely he is also probably the worst premier league manager of all time having got every club he managed immediately relegated or been sacked with the club under the threat of relegation.

An it harsh, as some of those PL relegations were nailed on anyway, or extremely unlucky. Sometimes he seemed to be fired simply for not being fashionable enough!

There’s been some terrible appointments of sexy foreign managers who, given their resources, have done worse IMO

The worst in recent memory imo was John Carver. Took over a solid, somewhat talented Newcastle side 10th in late December, as close to 3rd as they were to the relegation zone. Dragged them into a relegation scrap, only staying up on the final day thanks to a bloke with cancer who the club disgracefully mistreated scoring a winner. 3 wins, 4 draws and 13 losses.

I'm sure the likes of Jan Siewert and Remi Garde had even worse records than Carver, but they inherited crap sides. FDB was obviously awful, but 4 games ain't enough to make him top for me.

Warnock's top flight record:

Notts County in charge for full season - relegated
Sheff Utd in charge for full season - relegated
QPR - sacked as they were heading towards relegation
Palace - sacked as we were heading for relegation
Cardiff full season - relegated

His record speaks for itself. Brilliant in the lower leagues - the best. Beyond woeful in the top flight - the worst.

Has anyone taken 5 clubs in 5 seasons either down or into the relegation zone before being sacked?

It's proven catastrophe.

Of course stats don't tell the whole story. He did brilliantly to get 4 of those 5 sides promoted. But his record once there is amazingly poor, the worst.

His record outside of the top flight is borderline genius, but astonishingly shit in it

He also did very well to even have Cardiff as competitive as they were in the prem, and by most accounts, Sheff United too.

This line of thinking to me feels like arguing that Norwich (or whoever’s been relegated the most) is the worst premier league team ever, when it’s quite clearly Derby. If we’re talking about stats, Warnock definitely has a far better record of points per game than loads of other coaches.

I’d take Warnock back at palace over John Carver, that’s for sure.

I think it was a tough job the way he was dropped in at the last minute. Things weren't great but we needed someone and we needed someone very fast.

Motivating those players who would have felt dumped at the last moment by Pulis wouldn't have been easy.

As soon as Pulis walked most of us on here and the media believed we would go down. He wasn't great but as you said he kept us in touch and the morale/ confidence of the players was nowhere near as low as it was when Pardew left 2 years later.

He took over in very difficult circumstances, and was the right man to give some sort of continuity of style after Pulis's desertion. He started ok, but we were in free fall by the time he left. He was the right appointment in the circumstances - and actually some sort of a success - because, and only because, Parish sacked him quickly enough when it started to go wrong. As you say, we we in touching distance when he left - with the disruption of Pulis's walk out, we could easily have been cast adrift.

It shows what a good job AP did he took a NW team that was going down and kept us up of course it went wrong in the end but most managers only have a limited time.

I would take Warnock over Pardew everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. I never want to see Pardew anywhere near that home dugout again, unless it's in the opposing one. Warnock is also twice the man Pardew is.

Sheffield Utd was due to whams cheating, and the PL/FA not deducting points as the rules stipulated

As for the rest, yes they were relegated, but usually after he kept teams in with a fighting chance all season. Hes not even close to the worst top flight manager, there have been dozens of utterly clueless managers, he isn't in that category

His rescue job at Rotherham was remarkable

The game is better for having Warnock in it.
