Break up of the UK. Do we really care?

With Nationalism on the rise everywhere, the UK is certainly feeling the pressure. You have the Nationalists in Scotland that are even more rabid than Englands. The rise of Sinn Fein and a population tipping point in favour of the Catholics. Wales is a bit quiet but still have a vocal Nationalist group. So if they do go should we be bothered. We, as in England, pay more to support these regions, I believe but happy to be proved wrong. They want to go, its costs us money why wouldn't we say cheerio and let them go with our blessing?

I think the majority of the English population wouldn't care. I think more English people see themselves as English, as opposed to British.

And then for those on the arguable far right - English people in groups like Britain First for example, are just as likely to be in the EDL.

I think the potential breakup of the Union is sad and I would assume it will make us look even more comical to the rest of the world. I also think losing Scotland and Wales would move our politics further to the right, and this isn't something I'm overly happy with.

If Scotland wasn't so bloody cold, I would consider moving there

So, as the income generated by London and the South East fund the majority of the rest of England, should they all #@#$ off too?

Such short sighted thinking.

I enjoy Great Britain &NI absolutely caning everybody at recent Olympics and I'd hate to lose that. Makes a big statement regarding our standing in the World for me.

If all this comes about, the English will have to quickly come to terms with their newly diminished place in the world.

I guess with Scotland it would just be a return to their former state before James 1. I have no idea at all what their GDP might be without any other support but I imagine they would seek European membership again and potentially gain some income from that as per existing countries with low GDP and low EU contributions?

I think nationalists miss a trick by being all gung-ho, warlike, anti-immigrant and generally inward-looking.

I reckon in the UK they should focus on things like restoring the ancient country names of Albion, Caledonia, Hibernia and Cambria; making sure that every village has at least three pubs; bringing back pounds shillings and pence; and laying down our arms and welcoming all-comers from all over the world to join us.

I might, though, be inclined to outlaw Morris dancing.

It will cause a sharp intake of breath in the Treasury when the Scots ask for the removal of the nuclear bases on the Clyde

I don’t want to see U.K. broken up but if, as it seems, it is inevitable I’d be the first one calling for an independent London.

Why should we fund the Tory voting, anti-immigrant, wealth sponges in the rest of England, or subjected to the government they choose?

All hail the United States of Great Britain.

Seriously though, this is exactly why you’re right, but as always voters will reap what they sow.

I would suspect that the Isle of Wight has a net negative on its fiscal contributions if this affects your reasoning at all?

Of course most of them are descended from the Angles, Saxons and Jutes who migrated here from the North German Plain in the fourth and fifth centuries AD.

Beyond thinking London should be independant I don't care anymore.

Having said that I seem to have more in common politically with the Scots than most of the English right now.

I have a plan so cunning for Welsh independence that Baldrick would be proud.

Make it the Monte Carlo of the west. Loads of casino's. Incredibly low corporation tax and income tax (much lower than England). A few 'ranches'. Publically owned utilities. Get huge loans from China to kick start it and give them a 30% share of the turnover. Aim to increase tourism. Let Russia bid to have their nukes stationed in Wrexham. Legalise and tax cannabis.

Saw a car driving round in Edinburgh today with the Saltire flying out of his window. Monday morning...no football or sporting event....just a grown man flying a flag out of his car window. What a sad fecker.

I wonder. There's a load of Scottish jobs etc reliant on those nuke subs. And thats just those in commission. There are, apparently, 20 nuclear subs awaiting decommissioning - and the MOD announced a plan to decommission 7 of them which will take, apparently, 12 years. Thats a load of work and jobs for Clyde - and I doubt those affected will be happy to see Devonport hoover up all the contracts.

It would be a brave Wee Jimmy Krankie to jeopardise those Clyde jobs having mouthed off so much about protecting Scottish workers.

Who would have the rights to the oil resources in the North Sea? I suppose those rights would belong to Scotland as the oil fields are in their waters more than what would be England's waters? But that could be one hell of a bone of contention as such much money rests upon it.

If it all became Scottish, they'd have little problems surviving without any support from England
