Surely this has to be good news.

No way would the club extend his contract unless they believed he was 100% fit, and a 100% fit Wickham is a great asset to have.

Averaged 5 goals per season before he joined us , and since he's been here he is averaging less than 2 goals per season ,

So not really that great of an asset really .

I suspect he is being viewed as a third/fourth choice striker. Very difficult to find players that are prepared to play that role although Campbell seemed happy to. Saves on a transfer fee and if we have cut his wages it could make sense. The medical staff must have approved this though surely?

I doubt it, when fully fit he's probably our best option, certainly the best finisher since Benteke was put out to grass.

Pleased with this. Sometimes players go through a bad spell with injuries but you can't write them off. He never had a history of bad injuries before he joined us and i'm sure the club consulted the medical staff to see what their opinion is of his chances of making a full recovery before handing him a new contract. I am of the firm belief he has the potential to be a very good premier league striker and have a hunch he might be one of our best players next season.

I expect that he'll be about as useful to us as Mutch or Kebe would be.

I suppose a contract is the right thing to do if it helps us shift him for a couple of million to a team who is willing to take a punt. As has been said, he's a good option when fit.

I refuse to believe we would have done this if there were any signs of injury left in him, we may well have been really pushing him to the limits these last few months and he has obviously impressed enough to be given this deal, we may now be looking to sell Benteke to loosen our funds and wages. The worse case scenario is both staying and failing in which case we have lost 1!!!! premier league goal. If it works out well, we could have a 10-15 goal target man and a few millions to play with. I wish him all the best.

Sounds like a good plan and if he comes good and gets fit, we can recall him and play him.

That's good news for Wickham and I hope he can put his injuries behind him. I suppose we have to trust the club when considering whether this is a good move.

It isn't a bad idea to keep an injury prone player so long as they're on the right wages and are sufficiently good once fit. My worry is that we have quite a few of these players, Dann, Tomkins and Sakho are all 'injury prone' although not to the same extent. Benteke and Hennessey are also injury prone. How many such players can we have in our team? We are carrying very little 'dead wood' in the squad and can reasonably expect all 25 to contribute. Its thus a shame that a number of our players struggle with injuries.

I feel sure it will be a low salary with high appearance fees. Not much risk in that from the clubs point of view and eery incentive for him to get - and stay - fit.

It could be like having a new......I'll get my coat

Confess Im a tad surprised. Still Roy has clearly been advised that Connor can still get back. One thing we must do is have fit and firing strikers next year

Absolutely and I don't doubt there's anyone more frustrated about it than him. I like him and see this as good news, clearly the club believe he has a decent chance of staying fit.

No , the club believes in giving existing players new contracts as its cheaper than paying for new players

Hardly prolific! We will be nailed on for relegation if he is our best option next season.
