Oscar Pistorius

Should Oscar Pistorius be allowed to compete with able bodied athletes? I sympathise with the guy because he is trying to compete doing what he loves and with guys, well, with legs! But im sorry, he clearly has an unfair advantage imo. How can it be fair to run against someone that has no latic acid build up? Id be a better runner than i am now if didnt have that problem!

I know alot of people will come on here defending him, but if you do, ask yourself this. Would you still be defending him if he was destroying world records. Lets say he takes a huge 5 seconds off the 400ms world record, would we let it stand? Or do people only tolerate him becuase hes not actually winning the races. Yet.

This is the wrong question - it assumes he is not using his muscles. The prosthetics don't create energy.

I think it's more pertinent to ask, "do the prosthetics constitute a different means of locomotion (like a bike), or do they simply allow for the performance of a task (like shoes)".

The lactic acid build up point is interesting. Not something I ever suffered with (I could barely make 200 metres so 400 was never an option). Is that something 400 metre runners suffer from. Not something I ever really had a problem with in training or shorter sprints.

I think he had them amputated at 11.

Even then, it would be a no IMO. Would they let someone compete in the marathon with a wheel chair against able bodied athletes? Nope.

I hate to say it but "no".

his "legs" are like springs...

but I don't think he will come anywhere near winning, I believe he barely qualified - but it is setting a precedent I'm afraid.

ummm. It does raise an interesting "sports and ethics" issue.
Is the issue that the prosthetics will give the athlete an unfair advantage over other athletes? If so, are we not already in a world where some athletes have an unfair advantage through other means? They simply are not being caught. And those individuals are breaking records.

The reality is that there is not currently a level playing field. That is what needs to be managed correctly.
