Whilst I didn’t agree spending £100m like they did is good.. they did sign some good players.. just too much at once and had a terrible back 4 unit.

With us we don’t need that scattergun approach.. we have the basis of a quality squad 3-4 quality additions and we will be mid table at worst

Last season we brought in Guaita and Meyer on free transfers both of good quality with a re-sale value to add to the balance sheet while being of great use on the pitch.

More likely we will see more transfers in like this rather than big buys like Benteke or Sakho who were major financial outlays for a club like Palace.
Perfect, I can’t agree more that young blood is the way forward. It’s important to balance the seniors we have with the potential coming through and add to that as needed. If we can become known as the club to develop and bring through, we will be well set up for staying as a long term premiership club without constantly looking over our shoulder and worrying about the finances

How good would it be if we could bring Dreher, Kirby and Woods into the 1st team squad next season.....

Not sure about Kirby, but the other two have a very good chance I would think.

It's the 64 million (not thousand) dollar question.

And possibly Nikola Tavares and Mitchell. Another one or two of these academy players could really help seal the future of the club. We apparently have some great prospects at younger ages groups so if we can develop those closest to first team now the future looks really promising.

Personally I would love it, but it seems historically the ones that have made it came out of nowhere so to speak.

I don't think I recall ever there being a "nailed on first-teamer" come though in recent history.

Moses? Mind you, if Peter Taylor was still manager he’d probably still be slowly ‘nurturing’ him through.

Can’t think of any others though.

Ben Watson and Wayne Routledge? Although I think that was more due them being highlighted on Channel 4's 'The Players'.

Can’t think of any others though.
Moses was seen as a potential super star from about age 14 - and Taylor refused to play him. Warnock threw him in (aged 16) more or less as soon as he took over.
Zaha developed late - I think he was nearly released at about age 16 - but there was a lot of hype about him and he made his debut aged 17 after a run in the youth cup.
Scannell was fairly hyped from age 15/16 because he was playing above his age at international level.
Routledge was quite hyped as a kid and made his debut at 16 - and nearly scored!
I’m not sure how hyped Watson was but he made his debut - and was MOTM - at 17 and was always in and around the team from then on. A bit like Johnny Williams.
Wiggins was very hyped from15/16 and would have played more for the first team if it wasn’t for injuries. He did move away and build a decent career. Although at 16, he was keeping Bale out of the Welsh youth sides so it wasn’t the path he was hyped for. I remember we got thrashed by Southampton u18s one year in the youth cup and the two left backs were by far the best players on the pitch.
Of course, bostock was hyped from age 13 and that could have been different. He did make 5 first team appearances aged 15/16 and a few for Spurs aged 16. He remains the youngest ever player for both clubs.

He’s right though (as you are about Taylor/Moses) - Soares, Hills, Cadogan, Borrowdale, Parsons, Clyne, Wan-Bisaka and, to an extent, Zaha all burst through pretty unexpectedly.

From my memory, Johnny Williams seemed to just appear from no where aged 17 one pre season?

Whereas players like Grabban, Bostock, Aaron Fray, Lewwis Spence, James Dayton, Jerome Binnon-Williams, Jerome Boateng, Rhys Wiggins, Reise Allassani, Kyle da Silva, Ibra Sejakka, and Bostock were all very hyped (not necessarily by the club) and didn’t really make it at Palace.

The story about how Scannell and Moses started training with the first team is great. Something along the lines of Warnock came in as boss and within a few days could see what was painfully obvious to everyone - the team Taylor left behind was slower than a snail in reverse. So Warnock approached the Academy and asked for the best quick players available, and they suggested Scannell and Moses.

It is utterly bizarre to think that those two were available to Taylor and they weren't even training with the first team. This whilst we were playing blokes like Jeff Hughes and Dave Martin on the wing instead

Looking back John Bostock started a full game for the first time on 6 November 2007 away to Cardiff in a 1-1 draw. Victor Moses came on as a substitute for him in the 72nd minute making his first team debut.

Despite the hype surrounding Bostock at the time VicMo always looked the real deal even before he played for the first team.

Routledge came through before that programme was ever aired and was known about. Watson was highly thought of too but we were quite full on central midfielders at the time and he had to wait.

Really the one who had the most fortune and got a chance to break through is Gary Borrowdale, but he slowly faded away after a few years.
