A reminder
In 2016/2017:

"Wages at Palace, at 111.8 million, are 78.3% of every 100 earned. Wages at Palace are proportionally the highest of any Premier League Club"

Also Palace had the fourth highest spend in the Premiership at 109 million, creating the fourth highest NET spend at 65.3 million. Only Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd had more in both figures.

Those two facts might explain a bit towards why there's no money left....

That wage to income ratio is barking and not sustainable IMO. But....I have no idea what an alternative model looks like for us with our current set up.

It's not the only thing to consider, but that is not exactly saying we are a well run club - the opposite maybe.

Sorry if this financial sensibility does not suit your agenda but Palace have to spend what they can afford and the only way to raise our FFP spending limit is to generate more income by having a bigger ground.
A bigger ground isn't the only way. A transfer strategy that includes buying young players with potential (not just buying a striker from Margate).

As an example, Campana was this type of player but we had no plan for how to look after him. After touring around Europe he's now doing very well and worth a lot more than the 1m we bought him for.

Of course we will always need players for now to avoid relegation but some of the budget needs to be put aside for younger players and not all blown on players we can't really afford.

Liverpool used to be masters of this. Pick up a guy from a smaller club nurture him through to first team, Ian Rush. Or identify talent from lower division and take a punt ala Kevin Keegan. Think all they do now is buy.

He's far too good to be pushed out wide permanently. Just because he is allowed to drift into central positions doesn't mean he can't run the channels too. We need him to have a free role with no defensive responsibilities. He's our No10. But what he desperately needs is a centre forward up top with him and some wide attackers to take the focus away from him and to carry us up the pitch. (Although if we have a centre forward it will be slightly less of an issue because we can go long.) Anyway I digress...

Precisely. If Benteke is 27m and Tosun 25m how much is someone better? 40m+? I back Wickham, Benteke and Zaha to score enough goals relative to the quality of the rest of our team. Investment needs to be on young wide attackers who can carry us up the pitch.

I think most people get that - we just don't agree with the players that have been brought in over the past few years - their quality, the transfer fees paid and what we are paying them. That is why we now have no money to spend and why we spend a higher percentage of our income than nearly every other premiership club.

We have made very few shrewd purchases in the last six years and we have brought in some utter dross (Campbell, Mutch, Souare etc.). We have a squad with a very weak mentality - most have been relegated elsewhere (Townsend, McArthur, Ayew etc.) and some more than once (Dann). Others have always played for struggling clubs (Wickham). Others were misfits at their previous clubs (Benteke, Sakho).

That could all be forgiven if we had also invested in our academy and had a long-term strategy for developing our own players but the youth teams have been using Goals for the past few years.

Shambolic way to run a club.

and we are still fighting it out with newly promoted sides every year. I just don't get why this happens and Bournemouth, Watford etc progress spending less?

Last year it was Burnley, now they are struggling. Loads of teams were in the prem a few years but are relegated now. Southampton were great but are now shit.

Who knows where Watford will be next year.

really is a huge spending advantage (if you have the cash) for newly promoted clubs as you really have 3yrs to get your books in order.
we have hit a financial plateau, and without a serious upturn in revenue (adding another 8000 seats would help), we will just roll the dice every season till we lose.

...but Ian,there is strategy developing and not one that can be installed overnight with players on contracts not easy to dispose of.
If i understand it the likes of Punch, joniesta and souares contracts are up at the end of the season and their places in the 18-25 part of the squad will be replaced by current academy graduates considered good enough and ......in dougies and paddy macs own words publicly 'create a pathway for our younger professionals to the first team squad'.
for a club of our size i suggest it only possible to acquire a marquee signing every other season of real quality that we all crave.
god forbid we should releagted but in one foul swoop we would be 'out of jail' with the easy sales of Zaha and wan bassaka.
we are not in financial meltdown !! .....just a short term cashflow issue that is and had to be addressed.....eg ayew and sorloth

Dont see how the presence of any of the above affect his belief that he can 'spot a player' and 'drive a hard bargain in the window, and his recruitment strategy of employing Football Friends like Dougie and Mark Bright in positions that would benefit people who have achieved technical roles within the game on their own merit, not the fact that they used to be Palace icons.

Really can't understand what you are saying apart from taking a pop at Parish.

FFS, who do you want to own the club?
