It does feel like we are close to having a very good starting team which has taken a long time to build.

Very solid central defence and excellent full backs.
A much improved centre midfield with Meyer and Kouyate.
Great wide men in Andros and Wilf

Only thing missing is a regular goal scorer up top... so we either need to find a way of getting Wickham or Benteke on form or invest to complete the puzzle.

The next issue is then the 2nd string... we are threadbare if we get any injuries to the above.

Well Ayew was caught by someone in a wheelchair when running for a ball so this is not necessarily a requirement.

Just realised some damning facts about our forward players and the whole team's finishing really.

This season we have played 10 home games and only scored in 3 of them.

Out of the 5 goals we have scored at home, 2 were penalties, 2 were long range wonder strikes and one was a cross that went in (ie. lucky).

So we haven't actually scored a home goal from inside the box this season, apart from penalties. The wonder strikes won't come too often and neither will the lucky ones.

Out of the seven games we have failed to score in, we have missed huge chances in most of them.

v Saints Benteke missed 3 massive chances
v Newcastle Sakho missed a complete sitter
v Spurs Sorloth wasted a great chance
v Cardiff Townsend, Kouyate and Wickham all missed great opportunities
v Chelsea Wikcham had a great late chance

It is also noticeable that with most of the big chances we have we usually don't even make the keeper do any work at all - they are usually high/ wide or sometimes hitting the woodwork.

To be honest considering all that, it's a wonder we are still a few points above the drop zone (at the moment).

You’re not wrong. Time for a bit of tinkering with formation/team perhaps?

Maybe, but getting a natural goalscorer in the team will help.

It is obvious that the way we set up is all wrong. The sooner Hodgson changes this (which he wont) or is sacked, the better.

This is the thing that a lot of people are missing. We have evident holes in the squad but less and less each season. At least seven of our first team would be contenders to walk into any side outside the top six. Our defense and midfield have enough qualities that we have done okay without a goalscorer. We are a good striker and a good CAM and additional winger away from a squad capable of making a real impression in this division. Progress is happening.

I'm glad someone has written this all up. I was thinking exactly this when trying to work out if people like me who are questioning Roy's tactics are being as unfair as some on here would have you believe.

Outside of the perceived squad limitations etc. this is one of the most dull periods to be a Palace ST holder. It's a shocking indictment of our home goal-scoring prowess that my mate (who has only attended the Toulouse friendly this season) has seen us score only one less home goal than I have all season.

It's now getting to the stage (like it was at the beginning of last season) where I'm half hoping we don't score at home, so I can pretend to dispassionately observe events like a science experiment and to see how many more records we can break.

Cheers Barrenboys,

Carlos

Good post.

It's been grim at home this season but I'm still hopeful that we will become a much better team with some new strikers/attacking midfielders. Really hope the Board don't mess it up this time.

It seems we are putting all our faith in a Solanke move, but if either we don't get him or he isn't that great, where do we go from there?

I don't disagree but it doesn't change the fact that home fans have been starved of entertainment and goals this season. And whether we solve the striking problem of course remains to be seen.

Some good foundations are there but without the ability to score more often there is an argument they haven't improved us much over the last few years.

We've also been lucky with injuries so far this season. Bar Benteke, our strongest 11 have all been fit the vast majority of the season. Our squad depth hasn't been tested so far this term and I'm not convinced how good it is.

Whilst I do not disagree with you, it is interesting that the PL stats for ‘ it chances missed’ we are in 15 place with 19. Half that of Watford.

Big chances missed is also a little misleading, because we have hit the woodwork 12 times (2nd highest behind Chelsea with 15) yet the majority were not actually classified as big chances missed, yet were as close as you can get to scoring.

Also worth adding we’ve had 154 shots at home this season, in only 10 games and only scored 5 as already mentioned!!

Whilst I see merits in the criticism of Hodgson at times, our set up, shape and personnel (the majority without a recognised CF) has seen us have an average of 15.4 shots a game at home. With a conversion rate of just 3%. A lot of that simply has to fall on the players shoulders.

I have looked at the xG data today, and it does bare out that our finishing is terrible as we are the PL team furthest away from the number we should have scored. We have scored almost 6 goals less than the chances we have created suggest we should have. However our xG is also the 15th worst in the league. We don't create enough shooting chances and when we do we don't take enough of them. Conversely, our xG against is 7th best in the league, and we have conceded the same number as expected.

We know that survival is usually based on ability to defend rather than to score.

Exactly the sort of player we need, enough with the target men please.

We've got 6 goals less than we should have based on xG and also scored how many that were not expected goals? Townsend and McArthur against Burnley? Townsend against Man City? Luka against Leicester? Being 6 behind expected, but having scored 4 completely unexpected suggests our finishing is even worse, bar a few worldies!

I get that we have hit the woodwork when perhaps not expected to score means it is not a big chance, as xG indicates, but that is 12 chances that were a matter of inches away.

Based on shots on goal we are 11th, which suggests we are creating them, but not taking them.

Out of interest, what xG % constitues a big chance and not just a chance? Upwards of 50%/0.5?
