To be fair, that was the one home game I missed

I obviously agree that maybe there is an element of coaching which needs to be done. But I do think some people are putting an unfairly large amount of blame on Hodgson for this. At some point the only people who can be blamed for being incompetent at finishing are the players themselves. It's genuinely embarrassing that we have 10 highly paid professional footballers outfield, who (with a few exceptions) all appear to have non-existent composure and can't hit the target from even a few yards.

Does Hodgson deserve some criticism? Probably. But I think the buck really stops with the players here.

We also have Bright and Freedman who both use to know where the back of the net is.

Last season we had Benteke fit for most of the season, missing sitters. Now he is back, well…...

Exactly. This is a consistent theme under Roy. We missed sitters last season too.

In the PL every outfield player needs to take the straightforward chances. Top teams don’t rely on one centre forward. Palace fans blaming Benteke or not having a striker for half the season don’t have a clue. The chances missed by our defenders and midfielders are disgraceful.

McArthur used to score. PVA used to score. Kouyate used to score.

Look at their career stats and compare them to this season.

We have been terrible at converting chances at home this season and last. Coincidentally the same period Roy has been in charge.

We won’t go down, but we also won’t have the stand out season we should do because of this.

It's definitely a confidence thing. McArthur just lost it completely when all alone, just like he did v. Watford. We have failed to score and win in similar fashion against Watford (both games), So'ton (both games), Newcastle, Cardiff, Everton and Spurs at home. We'd be 7th if we had a proper mental trainer in our midst

Anybody blaming the manager for professional footballers missing easy chances and open goals is just plain wrong.

We're surely owed a game where these chances start going in and we're going to hammer someone

Look at Man City against Chelsea, converted almost every chance that came their way!

If we do that in any of our previous games and we destroy any one of West Ham, Cardiff, Burnley, Newcastle, Wolves, Watford (a), Southampton etc.

Which of course raises the fundamental question of why do we miss and they don't?? Is it skill alone? Confidence or lack thereof? Ineptitude?
Awareness in front of goal? Footballing IQ?

It also begs the question of why certain players rarely seem to convert their chances yet quite often find themselves in scoring positions. McArthur is the one who springs to mind. He is a rather poor finisher yet is frequently the most forward playing of our midfielders.
Surely if he is to be that then he must be coached in how to put the ball in the back of the net!

My guess is that many of our players are simply shot of confidence when they get an obvious scoring chance but they are not afraid of taking a crack at lesser opportunities (Wilf and Andros comes to mind. Kouyate always seems to fancy a long shot but it never looks dangerous).

What they need is a mental coach.

I suppose there’s a similar question as to why so many work does get scored against us or why so many players get one of their only goals of the season against us?

Dann would have had a few if he was still centre back. Problem becomes when you are not creating the chances, least we are creating many, and at some point the finishing will come good

I think it's got inside all of their heads now, that as a group, they can't score simple opportunities. None of them believe they'll take a chance, none of them believe their team-mates will take a chance either. Wilf's goal won't particularly help as they'll all know it was down to a deflection.

Every player seems to second-guess themselves. McArthur had 6-7 yards of open net to aim at from 6 yards, and froze. It didn't take Batshuayi long to catch the disease, either!

You only have to compare the pre match shoot-in between Palace and the opposition to see how bad we are.
I sit at the Whitehorse...so I see how good some teams are.
And when I then look down the other end to see some of our pathetic efforts it's frightening.

Having said that their expertise hasn't often followed through to the game....thankfully.
