As we did manage to stay up in those other 4 seasons without those 15 goals your argument that we would have been relegated is just plain wrong, just like we did before and after that season. I very much doubt you would get that answer if you asked Parish whether the gamble had "paid off". We are now on a really tight budget due to this sort of overspending and the quality of our squad has suffered significantly, as proved recently. The only real glimmer of hope is that he was clearly a good striker at Villa and that if he recovers fully we may see that player return, but it's increasingly becoming a very long shot. What's his transfer value now? Honestly for the wages we pay him I think we'd be lucky to offload him for £10m, and when his contract is up in 18 months I very much doubt anyone else in this country will pay him £120k/week even on a free. |

To be fair he took both goals well that day, although the defending by Liverpool was woeful for both.

Ah good work , 19 months since he scored a goal with his feet from open play
What about a home game , when did he last score with his feet from open play in a home game ? |

Do home goals with feet count for more than goals scored from set pieces, penalties and with the head?

What pathetic agenda is that ?
The only thing that’s pathetic is Benteke

No not at all but it is called FOOTBALL and I'd like to think that a 30 million pound professional footballer who earns 130k a week could at the very least use his feet , something has gone very wrong with Benteke because we all saw he had the ability at Aston Villa but mentally he looks totally shot to me . The knee injury should be cleared up soon but to me he clearly needs a few sessions with a Sports Psychologist , apart from the physical injuries something is very wrong with him , I have seen enough not to expect him to suddenly start scoring goals on his return to the team , does anyone ?

This is definitely Southampton, December 2016, when he scored 2, one of them gift-wrapped by their keeper ( I think it was genuinely his birthday that day).

Jeez, you people go on like he's actually TRYING to be bad. Negativity isn't going to help the guy get his mojo back.

I think penalties count less when assessing a strikers output. I also think it is pretty damning that a premier league striker can’t appear to score with his feet anymore given the price we paid.

In fairness, it’s worth remembering he scored a stonking header in the friendly against Toulouse. He was very, very good that day - held the ball up well, ran at defenders and rounded it off with a powerful header. It’s a pity that looks like having been a false dawn - but it was a reminder of how good he can and should be. |

Who knows what his state of mind was when he was still playing, he wasn't too bad holding the ball up etc, he just went to bits in front of goal, and when he didn't, the goalie inevitably made a fantastic save. A few months out of the firing line armed with the mental approach required to get back to fitness may also bring some new found confidence, in a way like wiping the slate clean. Redemption, and maybe even glory, could be quite easily be an incentive that would overwhelm his lack of self belief.
I don't think he'll ever be quite the player he was for Villa, that injury took some pace, but all we need is the one that can take his chances from time to time. We desperately need him back, and think his return would lift the whole squad, put players back in their positions and give Hodgson options from the bench. |

The point is, why replace one striker who hasn't scored goals with another of the same, plus his wages are similar to Benteke's. so you will be paying twice as much in strikers wages for the same result. ie no goals.

Repeating myself. The guy is too bulky... look at his younger days at villa...lean. He doesnt have the speed off the blocks, this makes him look sluggish. If Pardew did one thing rigjt it was to get early long diagonal balls to Benteke....Roy doesnt do this.
Yes he has squandered chances but he gets starved of service overall. |
