On that basis, we should be aiming for Europe even if we don't get there for whatever reason - injuries, bad luck etc. However it is only since the temporary signings of Batshuayi and Sako and Benteke regaining fitness that we have had enough attacking options. We will need to sort that in the summer if we have any hope of fulfilling our potential. If the cycle is starting again we should have some money to spend. And surely Hodgson has as many connections at anyone.
Agree that our squad & team is strong enough for a top half comfortable finish. Apart from Benteke we've not really had many injuries over and above what would be considered normal for a season.

As things stand we are in the midst of a relegation dog fight scrapping it out with the teams around us who have had far less investment in their squads.

I'm very meh about Hodsgon next season - if we don't finish at least 7+ points clear then I'd look elsewhere.

Totally agree, we are playing the best foootball since we got promoted. He also seems a decent, humble man, which is more can be said of some over the past few years.
This idea being bought up of succession planning for a future manager is fanciful and will never happen. There isn’t another Premier that does operate in that way, it’s all about who is available at the time. Swansea were good at identifying managers with Laudrupp, Martinez and Rodgers, but eventually ran out of options, Southampton similar, then got desperate and went for Hughes.

Could make the same point for Leicester tbh. Wolves have only just been promoted yet are a strong bet for 7th (unless they get ‘found out’ ), and are backed by Mendes and a billionaire. Bournemouth backed by a billionaire too. A Europa league spot is possible don’t get me wrong, but I see it as unlikely with all this competition, and I am perfectly content with mid table and a go at the cups until the new stand. That’s what I’m getting at.
Zaha will have retired by the time the new stand is built. We need to harness his talent. We won't always have this opportunity - ironically, we might have to settle for mid-table when the new stand is built!! Our first XI is not as good as Everton's imho, but it would be if we invested in a couple of players. Sign a couple of £20m+ attacking pacy youngsters and whatever Everton, Wolves, Leicester sign we have a better chance of finishing above them because Zaha gives us the X factor.

It has been the injury to Benteke and the lack of quality attackers in both the XI and the squad that has held us back. We can sort this in the summer with 2 signings. It's as simple as that, and why I've been so frustrated this season. We will be ok now with MB and CB but I worry about what happens in the summer. We can't afford to be so light in an attacking sense next season. We still need the RLC replacement and we will need to replace Sako if he is released at the end of the season too.

He has been playing the wrong starting side almost all season.
So many games we look better after the Subs have come on who should have started in the first place re: our goals tally at home!!!!
Still Meyer not starting.
Still Michy not starting.
Ayew up top when we had a tall centre-forward for games like Huddersfield away.
Indecisive when subs are clearly needed as pointed out by away support on numerous occasions.
Sorry (I do like him as a Croydon person) but it is a DEFINITE 'No' from me!!!

OK he deserves his defenders so guess that's why this thread was started but come on!!!
We need to get in a better, more astute manager and scouting team!

One thing about Roy is that if we go on to have a good season next year no one from a bigger club will be sniffing around Roy to poach him like they would for the likes of Dyche, Howe, Santo etc.

The biggest fear of getting in any young(ish) manager that is capable of successfully doing the above, is that they will be off to a better/bigger club at the first sign of interest! Someone mentioned Everton, West Ham, Wolves above. Well, how many of those managers would be off when the bigger clubs come calling, and not just English based. We'd suffer the same fate and just join the merry-go-round of managers searching for stability again.

Whilst I'm not suggesting we stick with Roy purely because he is far less likely to do the off at the first opportunity for a bigger club, that is clearly the gamble for the club, but this does at least offer that opportunity of stability, for a bit more than short term.
English managers are naturally for some reason seen as unfavourable to a lot of the bigger clubs.

No doubt this one will cause debate, but Lee Johnson is doing a cracking job at Bristol City and has been for some time now. I think in time he could be a decent fit here.

Graham Potter is another doing a great under difficult circumstances.

Roy takes over from Holloway, we’d have gone down. Likewise after pardew. Underperformed all season with a good squad. Can’t proactiveky manage a game. Haven’t enjoyed watching us at all this season. Hope he steps down.

nice piece on Roy in the Mail

Roy Hodgson will succeed his old friend Sir Bobby Robson as the Premier League’s oldest manager this month, the latest milestone in a remarkable career spanning 43 years in eight different countries.

His former captain and The Mail on Sunday columnist Danny Murphy caught up with the record-breaking 71-year-old Crystal Palace boss...

Assuming that we stay up, then I can't see any reason why we would want him to leave in the summer, unless he decides the time has come to call time on a very long career and head off into retirement.

There are some big decisions to be made in the summer, including some big contracts to renew and I would welcome another year of steady Roy in charge rather than take a gamble on either a proven premier league failure or an unproven manager from the lower league.

Happy with Roy to continue the good work at the club. What we need is to start thinking about though is succession - he will not want to be doing this forever. While he is here though, we have an opportunity to appoint a potential replacement who could work alongside/as a number 2.
This would obviously not suit a high profile / top flight manager (are we likely to be able to recruit someone of that pedigree?), but might be very attractive to a younger, more inexperienced candidate - they might jump at the chance of learning at Roy's feet and getting to know the club and it's players before taking over the reins.

No manager will want to come here and lay cones out for Hodgson for a season being his "understudy".

No, we need to fk Freedman off. And when he has fkd off, he can fk off some more. And take gay snake with him. All the while he's at the club he'll be coveting the manager's job.

Get rid of him and bring in Mislintat or Cortese. Proper DOF material with no vested interest in managing the side.

Assuming his health is a-ok, Roy can stay for the next three years if we finally work out we need a plan.

Only winning the FA Cup can justify another 12 months..... We have not progressed as a team this season.... Underperforming squad you blame the manager.
Anybody keeping Jordan Ayew on the pitch .... Needs to be questioned.

Can't understand why Benteke gets a game. He can't see when we need a substitute reacts way too slow. We been in relegation battle all season again. I wouldn't mind a change at end of the season

1. We need to move forward, we need to look to be a comfortable mid table side, with more progressive football.

2. Whenever we try to move forward it nearly goes pear shaped!

Persuade Danny Murphy to be his number 2, I'd be very happy with that!
