If you have a winger who wins lots of penalties you need someone who's nailed on to score them. Our penalties used to be shite. Not any more.

He deserves to be on our top rate whatever that is. His penalties are very important to us. His leadership, his shooting ability, his overall game. P!us his ability to play every second of a tough premier league season. I think he is only one of three players among all 20 clubs that managed that feat this season. He had a sluggish start World Cup fatigue but shook that off and has had a good season. Not that it means a great deal but appeared regularly on " Garth Crooks " team of the week on the BBC website.

Without doubt one of our top players who we cannot afford to loose.

Seems to have been involved in almost as many of the goals we've scored recently at Wilf. The passing move goals we score seem to always have a Luka pass in there.

Also interesting stat - Luka covered more distance than any other PL player this season. 447km. A couple ahead of Jack Cork and they were both way ahead of Jorginho in third.

I think we'd miss him more than many people realise if he left.

We need a proper ball winning midfielder along side him, I don't rate Kouyate to take us to the next level we need to go. We need to find a shit Kante somewhere.

£55k per week according to other sites. Less than Kouyate and Schlupp if any of this is accurate.

Right, our wage policy bites us on the arse again. He's ever present, Captain and top scorer, can't be earning less than half what Benteke gets.

Totally agree. This is why wage structures are so important and why it was mad to break it like we did.

As for Luka, he's too bad for an "unknown foreigner". Wish we would sign more.

The more relevant factor is what would he get elsewhere? That’s what we would need to match/better. Markets fluctuate. Footballers wages (as part of the overall transfer package) are a market like any other.

We were right to do so for Wilf - and I suspect in stand out cases other players sort of accept the disparity. But if run of the mill, underperforming colleagues are way ahead of the rate, then that will of course sow discontent - it's the same in pretty much any industry.

The only element that is tricky is free signings - they will inevitably receive higher wages, unless the club pay a lump sum separate (not sure how it works).

On the other hand Benteke, when he joined us, was considered one of the top strikers in European football. Bringing players of that calibre to the club helps you keep the likes of Luka and Wilf and helps us attract the likes of Batshuayi, Meyer, Sakho etc....

Sure it seems unfair based on contribution but that's football and always will be.

Has Luka shown 'discontent'? Have I missed something?

Indeed and I should think strikers are usually more expensive and can command higher wages than midfielders.

It just seems unbalanced because Benteke hasnít contributed as much as Luka, but thatís how it goes sometimes. Iíd never heard of Luka before he arrived and he might have been a flop.

Luka can now use his record to negotiate an improved deal and an extended contract. Whereas Benteke might not be offered an improved deal.

Iím sure Luka will get a good deal. Heís a good match for us and probably not quite strong enough in his passing for the top 4 clubs, so I doubt theyíll be sniffing around to compete for him.

I wouldn't go that far, we signed a player whose dream move to a 'big' club had been deemed a failure after spending most of his season at Liverpool on the bench.

Was he??? He was a player who had failed to make it at a big club, with huge question marks over his fitness due to years of persistent injuries. He was a massive risk!

Let's not rewrite history to suit Benteke's form over the past 2 seasons.

Before he joined us he was considered one of the best strikers in Europe.

Luka is the best midfielder at the club but I don't think our midfield is that good. He isn't as good as people want him to be, if you take away his penalties he isn't the messiah. Without Cabaye doing all the dirty work and protecting him he has looked a far shadow of the player from last season. I don't think he should be captain but when you look at the whole dressing room there isn't one captain in there so it is worrying in the long run to keep going without a leader on the pitch, the same way the media keep going on about United not having any leadership we are in the same boat. Time to bring some steel and grit into this midfield to compliment the technical players.

Absolutely. With the exception of Wilf, there isn't a single player who had a bigger impact at this club since arriving and his level of consistency exceeds even McArthur. Luka is, at worst, good in a game. I don't believe we will find a better CM willing to come to us and shouldn't risk it. Luka is the linchpin of our midfield. We shouldn't sell him even to fund a top drawer AM.

We don't have a leader but finished 12th despite lacking a performing striker? We don't have a leader despite having one of the best defences in the division and winning away at Citeh and Arse? We are missing Cabaye so badly that we broke our points total record over 38 games? We have steel and grit. We lack the technical players in midfield. That's why we only perform consistently away from home, where we can use our wingers to counter and then use that steel and grit you claim we lack to see out wins.

Luka is the best and most complete central midfielder I have ever seen at Palace, especially at the level the Prem is these days. If he had an Erikson or Sigurdsson in front of him, Luka would be appreciated more for what he does. The fact that we don't have those players is not Luka's fault and it's technically gifted midfielders we need, not more grit and steel. It's all opinions, of course, but I just can't disagree with yours more.
