I get the impression he can see but cant close the eye or focus properly, yet. Its improving according to this article

TBF it's not that much of a hindrance in our team. Accuracy not being one of our fortes.

Absolutely and it appears Roy’s been assured first and foremost that he’ll be ok and he’ll return to football but Roy is rightly only concerned for his health.

Roy Hodgson has confirmed details regarding James Tomkins’ recent training ground injury, explaining that the centre-back underwent surgery on his eye socket.

The manager said:

“They needed to repair a bone underneath the eye and was trapping a muscle, affecting the eye’s ability to function properly. As far as I know he hasn’t had an operation within the eye itself, and all the experts can tell me is it’s a matter of time.

“Getting his eyesight back to what it should be is the all-important thing. The specialists don’t want him doing any physical training, even in the gymnasium. At the moment he’s focused on his eye returning to normal.

“It’s not a quick healing process; it could take still a long period of time. There’s no way he’s going to be rushed back into football until he’s 100% certain himself that his eyesight is fine, his eyesight is going to be perfect again, and he’s ready to play football.

“I remain glad I’m not sitting here talking about James Tomkins having been forced to retire from football because of a really bad eye injury that he picked up in training.

“All you can do is wait and rejoice in the improvement we seem to be seeing on a daily basis.”

If it was an injury in training they will probably be protecting the other player involved from the sort of grief you would expect them to get on social media. Especially if it was one of those players particularly singled out for criticism.

Very sad news but one has to wonder if it's really the end of the road for him. SO many injuries and not getting any younger is bound to take its toll somehow

He took a kick to the head from one of the strikers, I believe. He was trying to head the ball clear, the striker was trying to score. It was a totally innocuous, unintended consequence of players being committed in training.

This is an impact injury he should, in time, be able to recover from. It's not like a muscle or ligament injury where repeated damage becomes increasingly difficult for the body to respond to it.

More important things in life than football. Should make sure his eyesight is 100% safe before coming back, although he will be sorely missed.
