A great example of the danger of monopoly. Even as a customer, Amazon is shit. Years ago their website used to be pretty good - pages were clear, decent search results, it was intuitive... now the pages are completely cluttered, you search for something and it returns all kinds of different shit, and even when you click on an item you then have to spend ages scrolling through all the other crap they try and sell you before you even get to the item's description.

It's a truly awful shopping site now.

Think days of the mini-mall (such as Walnuts in Orpington) are dead. There is very little reason to visit them as the shops inside are pretty poor, mainly catered to pensioners and those that want nails done.

Argos closing down and moving into sainsburys is one less reason to venture into that mall.

Amazing how the Walnuts survives. You don't see many people from Mayfield Avenue, Farnborough Park, Knoll Rise or the 2 & 6 side of Petts Wood in there.

Local company Bath Store apparently on the brink of going bust.

Not surprised.

We are doing our bathroom and priced it up at a decent DIY form, looked at Bathstore and everything was more money. Also know people who bought from Bathstore and were not happy.

East Sussex Council have just announced they are introducing uniform parking charges across the county. (that mean charges will be raised to the highest existing level).
So that's going to pl55 the tourists off and impact all the shopping venues.

They are also hiring new parking enforcement officers.

I wonder who thought of this MasterPlan ? because it's going to hit retailers big time.

Probably somebody who has to buy equipment for schools, pay for the police and fire services and ensure that vulnerable kids and adults are protected.

Blame the government for their swingeing budget cuts. Councils have to raise this deficit somehow.

Free car parking across West Oxfordshire. A far better place to be.

Charging more for car parking across the whole council area is more likely to push shoppers to use the internet than increase parking revenue.

This then has a knock on effect on the footfall on the high street, especially if they start charging town prices to park locally. When shops stand empty, councils lose out on their rates and then that revenue falls.

Yep. They should be reducing parking charges and possibly make it free at weekends. Just like my local whose answer to falling sales was to put prices up.

I suppose if the product has low price elasticity of demand and the price increase supports investment which improves its quality or attractiveness (e.g. doing the place up), this could arguably make sense.

Also there are some products that have negative price elasticity of demand - the more you charge for them the more you sell keeping all other variables the same. Don't think a pint comes under that though! A typical example would be products at price points so low that people are suspicious of them.

Lingfield race track has a Madness concert tonight and the website implies there are no tickets. So the shopping centres should perhaps hire a ska band.
