I think the same ‘journalist’ got a kick up the jacksy for saying something similar to another Apollo astronaught too.

A truly stunning achievement.
The focus naturally is on the first landing, but to realize the true achievement of Apollo you need to take a look at what Apollo 17 (the last mission) managed to achieve.

The only criticism that can be leveled at the program was the cost. Numbers vary as to how much was spent to put 12 men on the moon, but the cost of Project Apollo was somewhere in the region of $300 billion in today's money. Meanwhile, to put that into perspective, over a similar period on "Project Vietnam", the USA spent around $1 trillion in today's money.

As people on here find it miraculous and in awe that 60's tec got them up there on to the moon and back as I do there's always going to be some that believe that a Gov't who could not hide a break in could fool the world that a man landed on the moon.

Wasn't it around 400,000 people that worked on the Apollo 11 project?
That's a lot of people to fool/keep quiet.

At the risk of sounding like a naive altruistic child; imagine if that money, effort, brain and man power was put towards finding treatments and cures for illnesses and conditions that cause misery for so many. I’d rather live in that society.

The little video on the Google logo today is pretty good.

As Collins says, we carry around a more powerful computer in our pockets now than they had back then to work with.

Times were mad enough for the Yanks to fake it but it's obvious it is not. The moon isn't that far away. Plus, re:science - Atomic bombs had been invented a whopping 25 years earlier and rocket science went ballistic during WW2.

It happened. Not in a film studio's parking lot but on that thing made of cheese.

Governments can barely have a single meeting about which biscuits to have for the next meeting, without it leaking.

Let alone carry out that

Oh absolutely. What irks me is that most people don't mention the cost of "defence" (the Vietnam comparison) when suggesting money should have been spent elsewhere.

Very true, Bubbs but, and not in our lifetimes obviously, we'll have to find another planet to live on and f*ck up in the future.

There's a decent program on bbci called 8 Days to the moon and back that's worth a watch.
