We're in danger of creating, what Ed Bunker called, "Animal Factories" in which the prison system functions by taking in offenders, and creating more dangerous offenders, which it then releases back into society.
Sounds like the perfect business model.

I watched Andrew Neil last night and thought that Farage put up a strong showing (not that it matters now) however thought that there was no need for the wining from Neil about Johnson, really went on too long and came across as self important and needy from Neil

Except everything he said was true and completely valid. The Tories know that Johnson is a disaster waiting to happen, and have deliberately kept him away from scrutiny as much as possible.

Imagine being pleased that your party leader has squirmed out of being scrutinised.

The joke is that people think Johnson is a man of the people. Don’t forget this is the man who looked tried to close down Parliament and his advisor is in contempt of Parliament.

It’s really depressing how many stupid people there are in this country.

Farage, Swinson, Corbyn and Sturgeon have all had the guts to go on and face the questions.

The man that wants to be PM is in hiding. It's just embarrassing.

Yep. These guys don't like Corbyn and to an extent, I can understand some of their views on this. But what follows from about 3:30 in is just a load of nonsense. They still believe pro-Brexit propaganda and they have completely fallen under Johnson's spell. The Conservative party HQ probably watched this over some beers and all laughed their heads off.

I honestly think it's deliberate Tory policy, it's hardly a coincidence that all the best schools are in Conservative safe areas. We don't want the uneducated plebs asking too many difficult questions and The Sun/Daily Mail can keep enough of the thickos onside.

Brave, brave Sir Boris.

Brave Sir Boris ran away.
("No!")
Bravely ran away away.
("I didn't!")
When danger reared it's ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
("I never!")
Yes, brave Sir Boris turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
("You're lying!")
Swiftly taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the brave, Sir Boris!

Did anyone see the Channel 4 "focus group" discussion the other day? A guy was saying "the thing is with Boris is he says what he thinks, you might not agree with him but you know where he stands". How the **** did Boris Johnson manage to cultivate that image? It's the complete opposite of who he is. There's a subset of the population who think Boris Johnson is a can-do, straight-talking everyman. And they deserve the man he actually is. But the rest of us don't.

Its a common right wing trope. Presenting the idea that saying something false, wrong or offensive, is 'free speaking' - Its generally been spin at presenting a candidate as a 'ordinary person'. Its a bit like the 'guy you'd like to have a beer with' (Which I have done with Boris in the past actually, and he is a great person to have a drink with).

The fact that these would be a terrible attributes for a politician or leader is never really considered. Firstly, you want people who think carefully and critically about what they think, and how they express it. Much like the people you might like to have a drink with, aren't the same people you'd likely trust to look after your children.

The construction of 'common tropes' is a means of manufacturing public consent, so that when Boris Johnson says something racist, its 'just Boris being Boris', where as Corbyn is labelled an anti-semite on the basis of an issue within the labour party with some members.

Granted Labour should have dealt with this better, but its important to remember that its at least engaged with this. Similar issues within the Conservative party have been on an 'agenda to address' for three years.

Thats not to say Antisemitism in the Labour party is in any way acceptable or shouldn't be addressed or the party held accountable for the failures - but that these problems are treated very differently in terms of 4th Estate holding them to accountability. Its certainly costing labour support and votes, but that the issues of racism, mysogeny etc in the Conservative party basically is treated as a pass.

People aren't stupid, were only as informed as we choose to be. A lot of people aren't interested in politics beyond the surface level and as such aren't exposed to the greater arguments beyond the soundbyte and what is broadcast and published on 'the front page'.

Its important as well to remember that a large part of the population may not have that much of an education either beyond school.

Someone who's a mechanic, is unlikely to have access to the educational tools necessary for broader understanding of things like economic models or political / philosophical arguements etc. The 'crime' here is with a media that reduces everything to opinionate bullet points, rather than explain concepts to their readers / viewers.

Its concerning really though when you see people with a university education who seem to be entirely stupid. Those f**kers have no excuse. They're f**king stupid.

There are good reasons to vote for any of the parties, and these tend to revolve around rather complex arguements. Its not surprising that people who maybe lack the toolsets to full engage with those arguements are more influenced by the propaganda and soundbytes of parties (the same is true of Labour, Conservatives and sadly now the Lib Dems).

Its the difference between understanding feminist theory and being dogmatic on political correctness as a measure of standards to hold people to.
