2015/16 season compared with last season calculator

The following thread compares the results from last season to the actual results in the coming season. It is not a predictor but it does provide a guide to how well we are doing overall.

In our first season it was our form against the clubs who eventually finished below us that stood out, whereas last season we almost doubled our number of points against the teams that finished above us but dropped points against teams that finished below us, particularly at home. Our away form continues to be our main strength.

Over the 2 seasons around one third of our points have come from the teams who finished above us and two thirds from the teams below. However, in both seasons we only accumulated 16 points in the first half of the season. Before the fixtures came out I thought we should be aiming for 25 points in the first half of the season and looking at the comparable results from last season this is certainly achievable. That would leave us in a comfortable mid-table position at the half way stage but as we know things don't often go to plan.

I have switched the results from last season for Hull to Bournemouth, Burnley to Watford and Norwich to QPR.

I have added a couple of columns to show the actual number of points we had after each game in the previous 2 seasons. Now includes the 2004/05 season to show we love a slow start.

Good stuff... This and Ian Hart's thread of doom were probably my most visited webpages last year. Well, excluding private mode browsing, obviously.

I noticed this last season but it's possibly more evident now:
When you look at our actual results, they go in fits and starts. We had runs where we couldn't buy a point and others where we were getting them every game. Come the next season's fixtures, those points are fairly evenly spread throughout the calendar. I think the league does a pretty good job of not giving teams impossible runs.

The fixture list does throw up some 'strange' runs.

If we match the results of last season we will only pick up 3 points from the first 4 games and final 5 games. Likewise after the first 9 games we would only be on 8 points. If that looks bad, and just to remind ourselves, we were only on 9 points after 11 games last season.

The other interesting feature is that towards the end of the season we have a run of 'winning' games which almost coincides with our actual run of wins in the previous two seasons.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, I'm guessing the second Bournemouth game should be away?

Well spotted although it is the first game that is away. It doesn't change the result though.

Oops, that's what I meant.

Good work getting the thread started so early though!

If we carry on from where we left off it doesn't look unrealistic TBH.

Can't believe how far we've come, that we look at matches against only about 4 or 5 teams and think we're unlikely to pick up any points.

OK the big kick-off is less than 20 hours away.

The away game against Norwich replaces our 0-0 draw at QPR last December which left us stuck in the bottom three. Keith Millen was in charge following the sacking of Neil Warnock.

The same day Newcastle beat Everton 3-2 at home with Alan Pardew sending out John Carver to do the post-match interviews. Little did we know....

I would be happy with the draw given either Cameron Jerome or Lewis Grabban will no doubt score against us.

Mine ended up far more pessimistic. I thought I was being fair! Oh well...looking forward to being wrong

FFS, pull yourself together man.

There are a few clubs going to be having a harder time than us.

At the risk of repeating myself this is not a predictor but gives an indication of how well be are doing compared with last season.

You can make all the predictions you want when Ian Hart starts his 'Staying in the Premier League Calculator' thread towards the end of October.

Predicting we will get 36 points is defeatist talk although it does mean that we might just avoid the drop
